The Jonathan Law girls soccer team is ready to start its fall season.

Head Coach Mrs. Francisco, is prepared to lead the team with the help of senior captains Ashlyn Smithauser and Emily Vella and junior captain Cora Aitkenhead. Law’s first game is September 8 against North Haven at Lawmen Stadium.

Fransisco said Law had a great preseason and that the team is improving every day.

“Our preseason so far has been like a puzzle: trying to figure out which spots work best for each player and the team in general,” Francisco said. “We are growing as a team each day and getting excited for the regular season to start.”

Smithauser is eager to step up and help lead the team this season with positivity and laughter.

“Being captain, this season means leading my team by example, supporting our team, communicating with our coach, and representing our team with respect on and off the field,” Smithauser said. “As a senior, I want to go out with a bang, have a fun-filled last season, and grow a stronger sisterhood with my teammates.”

Vella is looking forward to helping the team qualify for States, beating last year’s 3-8-5 record.

“My team goal for the season is to hopefully make States by winning at least six games,” Vella said. “Personally, I am hoping to achieve All-State recognition for the third year in a row.”

Aitkenhead said she is ready for her new role as a leader of the team.

“My biggest responsibility as a captain is likely going to be keeping the balance of when to have fun and when to keep the team focused and centered,” Aitkenhead said. “While a high school sport is one of the best ways to connect with your peers and let loose, I think our entire team can agree that building relationships built on reliability and each of us being willing to put in our fair share of effort/focus to improve, will not only be fun but give us the best results in growing as players and as a team.”

The team’s new player have been welcomed and helped by the team’s upperclassmen.

“I’m excited to see the underclassmen grow and learn throughout the year,” senior Anna Bludevich said. “Although I am graduating, it brings me great joy to see how passionate some of these people are for the sport, With that, they continue to practice and be present when it counts for the team.”
