Law sophomore Juliana Rivera continues to thrive on and off the soccer field.
Rivera started off her high school career as a left back, but throughout her journey at Law, she became a midfielder and a center back. Girls JV soccer coach Mr. Mahler believes that Rivera is an integral part of the team, on the field and in the locker room.
“She’s a huge asset to her team,” Mahler said. “She’s skillful on the ball and great at linking play between defense and offense.”
Even though almost every girl on the JV team was new to soccer this year, they applied themselves and weren’t afraid to try something new. Rivera’s teamwork and leadership skills continue to make the team better.
“Whenever I needed help, she was always there for me, especially for people who are new,” freshman Nia Richardson said. “She will be there to bring you back up and boost up your confidence at all times.”
The bond between members of the JV team is very strong. They know that they can talk to each other about anything, even if it’s not related to soccer.
“Everyone can be serious when needed and still be able to have fun; our team’s bond is what makes it so special,” Rivera said.
Just like any other student-athlete, Rivera also faces everyday challenges.
“The most difficult part about being a student-athlete is managing my time,” Rivera said. “Sometimes when I get home from games, I won’t have the energy to do my work because I still have to shower, eat dinner, and then complete all of my work while getting a good night of rest.”
Throughout school, she uses every chance she gets to do extra work. When she has her doubleheader games, Rivera will bring her school bag to do work. Her determination and dedication for this team is unmatched.
“She is the best teammate ever, a leader on the field or off,” Richardson said. “She is always there when someone has a question, eager to help.”
Many of her friends off the field and in the classrooms also get to see her devotion and drivenness. They observe her working hard every day.
“Julianna is truly a future star athlete; I wouldn’t be shocked if she makes it pro,” sophomore Juliana Stassun said. “She’s one of the most skilled and talented athletes I know; it’s amazing to watch her play.”
Rivera is highly regarded among teachers, classmates, and teammates. She continues to work hard for what she wants, achieving more and more along the way.
“Juliana is truly my role model,” Stassun said. “I’ve never looked up to someone as much as I’ve looked up to her; she inspires me in ways that words cannot describe.”
