Jonathan Law’s football team has put together a 5-2 record this season and is hoping to earn a spot in the state playoffs.
One player helping the Lawmen work toward that goal is junior center Zach Hyatt, who has become an important leader on the offensive line.
Playing center requires communication, awareness, and teamwork. Hyatt has taken on a leadership role by helping his teammates stay focused and making sure everyone understands their responsibilities.
“I keep the offensive line focused by communicating with everyone, staying positive, and reminding the guys to focus on the next play instead of mistakes,” Hyatt said.
Communication has been one of the biggest improvements for the offensive line this season. The players have continued to build chemistry and learn how to trust each other on every play.
Hyatt believes the group’s improvement has helped them become a stronger unit as the season has continued.
“I think we’ve improved the most with our communication and chemistry,” Hyatt said. “We’re playing more as a unit, making fewer mistakes, and trusting each other more.”
Having strong chemistry is important because every offensive lineman has a job to do on each play. When players communicate and work together, it helps the entire offense stay on schedule.
Hyatt’s leadership has not gone unnoticed by his teammates. Senior quarterback Matthew Witteman has seen him develop into someone the offensive line can depend on.
“I have seen Zach grow into a leader for the offensive line,” Witteman said.
Another reason Hyatt has become a leader is his experience playing the position. He has been starting since his freshman year, giving him multiple seasons to learn the game and understand what the offensive line needs.
“He’s been starting since freshman year and has a lot of experience,” Witteman said. “He has pushed the other offensive linemen and makes everyone else better.”
Starting left tackle Ryan Woods said Hyatt’s ability to see the entire group allows him to communicate important information to his teammates before and during the plays.
“Him seeing the entire line helps a ton because he can point out what is happening and what needs to happen to be successful,” Woods said.
With a 5-2 record, Jonathan Law is continuing to work towards its goal of winning the state championship. The Lawmen will need to keep improving and stay focused as they look to finish the season strong.
For Hyatt, leadership and communication will continue to be important as the team moves forward. With his experience and the growing chemistry of the offensive line, he hopes to help Law reach its goal of winning a state title.
