SAVE Promise has begun their regular meetings and activities this school year. Advocate Editor in Chief Dani Kotansky interviewed SAVE Promise Club Co-President Aislyn McKernan about both upcoming SAVE events and an overview of the club. 

Dani Kotansky: What is SAVE Promise Club and what is the story behind it? 

Aislyn McKernan: SAVE stands for students against violence everywhere. We are a youth-led club which is a part of Sandy Hook Promise. We focus on violence prevention and mental health. 

DK: What are some goals for SAVE this year? 

AM: Some goals for SAVE this year are to grow our club and get everyone involved in the school community. We always have the goal of making everyone feel safe and comfortable in our school community.

DK: What is “Start With Hello Week”? 

AM: “Start With Hello Week” is September 21-25 this year. It is to get the school community comfortable and create positivity. We plan activities for that week to get classmates, teachers, and peers to get to know each other and create a safe space for new friends.

DK: What else can students expect to see from SAVE this year? 

AM : We are planning many activities this year. Our first big event will be in October (date to be confirmed) and we will paint pumpkins.

DK: When and where will meetings be held? 

AM: The meetings will usually be held in Room 126 but depending on space needed we might move to Room 128 or somewhere like the cafeteria. We have an instagram (@jlhssave) where we notify any room or plan changes. We meet on F Days during Advisory and once a month after school on Monday.
