Jonathan Law’s Debate Club is taking off again for the 2026-2027 school year.

This club is ready to hit the ground running and make this an amazing year. Club Advisor Ms. Goldbeck said the students came up with the idea.

“It took a couple of months to start this club,” junior President Anwita Puttam said. “First, we had to make multiple docs about all the information we needed, which took around a month, give or take. Then we needed to find an advisor, which was the hard part, but once we did, we had a meeting with Mr. Darcy to get the club approved. Finally, we started advertising and went on the news and made posters that we put around the school. I will say it was a lot of work, but it was definitely worth it in the end.”

A lot of hard work has gone into bringing back this great club, and as President, Puttam said it was worth it. 

“I’m definitely excited about being able to create mock debates and get people engaged in the club,” Puttam said.  “I also personally love debating, and I want to be able to spread that joy to other students.” 

Members of the Debate Club are also going to appear on the Morning Briefing to recruit new people. 

“We held an information meeting last year and had a mock debate,” Puttam said. “We are also planning for our first upcoming meeting.”

They are going to conduct mock debates and activities about fun, engaging, and widely known topics that will help the club become a larger community.

“The Debate Club has conducted some meetings with detailed information about the club and possible competitions that we can participate in,” sophomore Shloka Reddy Vanga said.

Debate Club will use sponsors and fundraisers like SnapRaise in order to attend meets.

“The students are going to fund the club by going into the community, specifically law firms and other businesses, and asking them to sponsor the meets,” Goldbeck said.  “The bus is a large cost, somewhere between $650 and $700 per month.“

Debate Club has many benefits and is a great way to develop community.

“I am most excited about participating in debate competitions and learning more about my own skills to improve and become a confident speaker,” Vanga said.

Freshman Sanjana Abbineni is also excited to join Debate Club.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone, getting involved, and learning more about debate,” Abbineni said.
