The members of the Jonathan Law girls swim and dive team are ready to begin their season, with their first meet at Lyman Hall on September 10. 

Led by Senior Captains Aislyn McKernan and Avery and August Oliveira, the team is well prepared to have a strong season. McKernan is ready to make an immediate impact as captain and guide the underclassmen. 

“My role is to encourage the team to always do their best in the pool as well as make sure everyone feels appreciated on the team,” McKernan said. ” I will lead the team by being kind but also stern when I need to be.”

With a good mix of returning and new athletes, Assistant Coach Mr. Lui is looking forward to seeing what will come of the team. 

“I’m looking forward to seeing the progress the girls make from the beginning of the season to the end,” Lui said. “I’m also looking forward to the energy of meets, watching the team compete for each other, and hopefully seeing a lot of best times along the way.”

The team will have their first home meet vs Guilford on September 22, and they will finish out the season at home against their crosstown rival Foran.  

Since athletes qualify individually for states and SCC’s, each one will look to hone their own skills, including sophomore Alex Oliveira. 

“My goal is to drop time in my events and to work on my technique throughout the season,” Oliveira said. 

The only diver on the team, junior Zoe Browne, has her own goals for the season, but is also excited to see what the team can accomplish. 

“I’m looking forward to competitions and improving my personal scores, as well as seeing the team cut their times,” Browne said. 

Junior Sydney Guest has big aspirations for this season 

“This season I am hoping to make states in all my events,” Guest said. 

For Coach Lui, it’s not just the meets that make this team special, it’s the atmosphere they have created. 

“I want us to continue to build on our positive team culture where the girls support each other, work hard, and enjoy being part of the team,” Lui said.
