The Jonathan Law girls swim and dive team is ready for the upcoming season. 

This year’s captains are seniors Ella Franzman, Paige Kantor and and Natalia Gagliardi.

“I feel like this season is different from last years because we have a ton of new girls joining the team and a lot of talent that I know is going to be super beneficial to our team,” Franzman said. 

The team lost four seniors from last year but have welcomed in six new freshmen.

“Something I’ve been trying to prioritize is making the freshmen feel welcome and part of the team by being someone they can go to outside of practice and finding moments to  become better friends with them when I see them as school and not just on the pool deck,” junior Kayla Markowitz said.

The team can be described as motivated, outgoing, and confident heading into the season. They are especially looking forward to this year’s Lion Heart Lapathon which raises money for cancer research. 

“The Lapathon last year was to raise money for breast cancer,” sophomore Aislyn McKernan said, “It’s called Lion Heart and Law and Foran swam together. We each got two lanes and we would swim together in groups.”

Last year, the team won against Foran by two points and the meet came down to one 400 freestyle relay.

The team’s goals this year are to keep their competitive attitude up and improve with each meet. 

“I’m really optimistic about this year,” Assistant Coach Mr. Lui said. “We have a great group of girls, including some promising new swimmers and divers who are already showing a lot of potential. I expect that we’ll be competitive, and our goal is to continue improving with each meet. The team’s energy and focus have been great so far, so I’m excited to see how everything will come together as the season progresses.”

The team has already grown immensely and plans to continue their hard work.

“As a team, the swimmers and divers have become more advanced, and as the season goes on we will continue to progress,” sophomore August Olivera said, “ Our team has always been centered on teamwork, supporting one another, and even though swimming is an individual sport we function as a family.”

The Law girls soccer team kicked off the season with an exciting win against rival Foran on September 3. 

The team ended off last season with a 11-5-2 record. They have big goals for the upcoming season and are ready to take on all challenges they are faced with on and off the field. 

“The girls have determination and passion for winning,” Head Coach Mrs. Francisco said. “We will also play to our strengths of speed and power this season, I am very excited for a good season this year.”

Key players this season include junior captains Avery Moulton and Layla Alogna, senior captains Maddy Baranowsky and Taylor Coretti, juniors Fiorella Gargiulo and Molly Croce, sophomore Emily Vella, and freshman goalie Gabby Rodriguez. 

Alogna explained that her personal goal for the season is to make sure the team is a tight-knit group. 

“I want to be the teammate that people can turn to in any situation on or off the field,” Alogna said. “When I was a freshman, my captains welcomed me and had my back no matter what and I aspire to do the same.”

Along with personal goals the girls create their own team goals every season. Fransisco summarized what the team brainstormed this year. 

“This year they included: having a team average GPA of 3.5 or better, making it to the second round of the SCC/State Tournaments, have a winning record, empower and trust each other, and also to listen to their bodies,” Fransisco said. “We try our best to focus on our soccer skills as well as our mental toughness.”

Baranowsky is ready for the highs and lows of the season, pointing out where the team can improve.

“I hope to improve on maintaining our intensity throughout the entire game, as well as not taking any team lightly,” Baranowsky said. 

Coretti recognizes the potential and determination that each individual player holds. 

“I am looking forward to each game because I feel like we have a great shot of winning a lot of the games,” Coretti said. “I am also looking forward to the team bonding because we really are a family this year.”

Moulton hopes to support the team in their personal goals and performance. She believes the key to being a good captain is to be someone the rest of the team can count on.

“I want to the team to be able to ask me for feedback or come up to me with any concerns,” Moulton said. “ I want to encourage the team and support them.”

Vella also has big goals for herself and the team this season.

“My personal goals for this season are to stand out to the other high school coaches and teams and to average having two goals or assists every game,” Vella said.

Jonathan Law’s boys soccer team kicked off its 2024 season with a big 3-1 win over Foran on September 3.

Last year, the Lawmen made it to the second round of the Class M State Tournament before losing 2-0 to New Fairfield. They are looking to make it farther than they did last year and make it into the SSC Tournament this season. 

“Im looking forward to playing with my fellow seniors for one last season,” senior captain Ryan Nastasia said. “It’s been an amazing last three years and hoping this one doesn’t disappoint either. I’m hoping we make it far into the SCC Tournament and to have home games in the State Tournament.”

Law finished with a record of  6-7-5 last season. The captains leading them this year are Nastasia, senior Dan Haluza, and senior Alex Rodriguez

“Ryan is our leader on and off the field;  he is a great mentor for the younger players and he sees the games differently than most players,” Head Coach Mr. Gruber said. “Dan is one of the hardest working soccer players on the field and he leads by example every single game and practice. Alex is a three sport multi athlete that understands the balance of how to navigate each season and can do special things on the field.“

The team lost several notable players from last year, including Cooper Fitzgerald, Declan Wywoda, Eliot Melgar, and Brian Goglia.  

This offseason, the team participated in a summer league with other high schools. 

“We have trained a whole lot this offseason, playing games against other teams, and having practices to lock in for this season,” Haluza said. “I feel confident and excited to see this team pick off where we left off even after losing some big names.”

Law’s first home game is Saturday, September 9 against Notre Dame. 

“My mind is set on becoming the best player I can be and letting up as minimal goals as possible,” senior goalkeeper Lucca Venditti said. “I trust my teammates to score the ball so it’ll be amazing to see my teammates succeed.”

The Lawmen are excited to keep the momentum going from the first game and are going to enjoy the 2024 season. 

“As a first year player, I’m excited to see where this journey takes me,” junior Ryan Nobles said. “My teammates have been very welcoming and the coaches are nice.”

The Jonathan Law volleyball team is looking to pick it right back up for the 2024 season.

Last season, Law made it to the Class L state playoffs before losing to Brookfield 3-1. Now they look forward to making the playoffs once again for a shot at the Class L State Championship.

“I think we have a very strong group and although most of us haven’t played next to each other before, we are getting into the groove of things and are super excited for our games,” senior captain Addy Barber said.

The team has been preparing for the upcoming season for a couple weeks now led by their captains: Barber, senior Ellie Coddington, and senior Alex Fino.

“I chose those three due to their experience and ability to communicate to fellow players and coaches,” Head Coach Mrs. Loch said. “They all have a very positive attitude and can be leaders without abusing their power.”

The team began their preseason with a scrimmage against St. Joseph’s and is looking forward to the start of regular season games.

“We need to collectively put our best foot forward and work hard at every practice and game,” Fino said. “We need to be there for each other, support one another and most importantly build trust and great friendships.”

Last year, Law graduated eight seniors, including Caden Simpson, Olivia Hudak, Kiley Sherman, Angie Robinson, Zoe Johnson, Ashley Borecki, Helen Chizmazia, and Samantha Chy. The team is excited to see how the underclassman step up and fill in their roles.

“There’s been a few challenges but we overcame them quickly,” senior Ellie Coddington said. “It’s always a little hard at the beginning playing with new people, but this year our underclassmen have made amazing improvements to our varsity team and we can’t wait to play our first game with them.”

The team starts their season on September 3 at SCC rival Lauralton Hall. 

Senior Haley Stroffolino, who previously played at Foran, is ready to make her debut for Law.

“This is my first season playing for Law and everyone has been very welcoming and supportive,” Stroffolino said. “Everyone looks out and cares for each other which creates a positive environment that will be a huge asset in our first game against Lauralton Hall.”

The Lawmen are excited for the upcoming season and are working to start the season off with a win.

“I’m excited to see how our team handles any setbacks or tough losses we face this season,” junior Madison Benedetti said. “I’m also looking forward to seeing how our team continues to grow and work together since it is a whole new group of girls out on the court this season.”

The Jonathan Law football team is getting ready to march down the hill again on September 13 to face the Brookfield Bobcats at 7 p.m. 

Last season, Law finished 4-6 with a 13-0 win against Foran on Thanksgiving. They hope to carry that momentum into the 2024 season.

“My expectations are high for this season because we have a lot of returning seniors on defense as well as our offensive coordinator returning from 2022,” sophomore quarterback Matt Witteman said. 

Witteman, who started several games last year, is excited to help lead the team once again. 

“It’s a young group both age-wise and experience-wise and as usual, they will need to grow up quickly to play here,” Head Coach Chris Haley said. “We have returning experience in some spots on both sides of the ball, giving us the flexibility to move that experience around.”  

After falling short of the state tournament last season, the team worked hard all offseason to be back and better this year. 

“This offseason the team had morning workouts at 6 a.m., Wednesday night practices, 7v7 tournaments and a ton of summer camps with other great teams in the state,” senior cornerback Cam Upchurch said. 

The team is hoping to bring back the scoring offense they had seasons prior. Defensively the team’s goal is to keep the toughness they’ve had in the past. 

“I feel like this year we have a strong group of returners and the new players have been really helpful in modifying our team,” junior linebacker Nick Cosmas said. 

The team’s home games this season include Notre Dame-West Haven, Amity, Shelton, and the annual Thanksgiving Foran game. 

The Lawmen are hoping to keep the Thanksgiving Trophy at Law again this year, which would be the 4th year in a row.

“This season I am looking forward to winning games in my last season with the boys,” Upchurch said. “The game I am looking forward to most is our thanksgiving game, because it’s a rivalry game and also because it is the biggest game of the year and we have the biggest crowd.” 

Witteman agreed with Upchurch and is super excited to play Foran – this time at home.

The Jonathan Law golf team faced a tough spring schedule this season – but finished on an incredible upswing. 

The team practiced hard all season and won matches against Wilbur Cross, East Haven, and Sheehan.  The highlight of the season, though, was winning back the Mayor’s Cup from rival Foran. The team also qualified for the Class M State Tournament. 

And at States on June 4, the team posted its best result of the year. Senior Jaden Archuleta broke the school record with a round of 77, junior Pete Savoie posted the second best round in school history with a 78, senior Patrick Paules-Harrold shot an 83, and senior Tanner Matchett shot an 89 to lead Law to a third place finish.

The golf team was led this season by coaches Mr. Koorejian and Mr. Maurutis, who worked hard to ensure every player made progress and got the opportunity to play. These coaches have been with this program a long time, and know what it takes to compete in the spring New England weather.

Maurutis said the season was full of memorable moments.

“My favorite moment of the season was winning the Mayor’s Cup against Foran as our last match,” Maurutis said. “Having our seniors play well and bring home the trophy was amazing.”

Maurutis said the Lawmen accomplished all of their team goals set before the season.

“Our goals have definitely been accomplished,” Maurutis said. “We had great scores this year, won the Mayor’s Cup, and made the State Tournament.”

Archuleta finished an incredible senior year where he shot in the in the low 40’s consistently and medalled in several matches.

“My favorite moment of the season was probably being able to have a practice round at Great River Country Club,” Archuleta said. “Just for the team it was an amazing time and truly something I will remember after high school.”

Archuleta said he accomplished most of the goals he set for himself at the start of the spring.

“I feel throughout the year I made good growth for myself and I’ve accomplished little goals I set for myself,” Archuleta said.

He added that much of the team’s success this year was due to its chemistry.

“I feel just how close the starting four is a weapon of its own,” Archuleta said. “We have chemistry like no other team has and we truly just have fun with each other out there. Those relationships will be long lasting years after high school.”

The Jonathan Law softball team recently finished their regular season with a record of 13-7 which qualified them for States and SCCs.

With hard work and determination, they reached the quarterfinals of the Class L State Tournament before falling to St. Joseph’s

“I think we had a rough start to the season, but we got back on our feet and pushed through our challenges and ended up with a great defensive season,” sophomore Sophia Scarpa said. “Our bats struggled a little but we took advantage of the big hits and the small ball.”

The girls worked hard during practices, off days, and games to improve each week.

“We had so many girls who stepped up all season long and worked really hard to make this season great,” Head Coach Mrs. Blude said. 

The girls decided to focus on team bonding to strengthen their ties this season.

“My favorite part of the season was an activity we did the other day before practice. We all picked a color of paint and had white T-shirts on,” junior Ella Franzman said. “Then questions were asked and we had to leave a handprint on the person we thought it related to.”

Law lost five seniors from last year’s team that made the State Championship game, but added several key newcomers this season.

“My favorite part was playing with the girls – they made me feel like family,” new junior Haley Stroffolino said. 

Next year’s returning players already have big goals and ideas for the next season. 

“I hope that for next season we take advantage of the fact that we do have a very underclassmen-heavy team and we can use that to create a lot of trust and confidence within the team,” Scarpa said. “Our performance is not an issue, it’s how we use our talent to create a strong squad.”

Franzman reflected upon the season and the accolades they have received. 

“Our goal for the season was to make the post-season tournaments and we have accomplished that,” Franzman said. “We were hoping to make it back to the State Finals but I’m really proud of all the hours and sweat we put into this.”

The Law girls lacrosse team recently completed a thrilling spring season with a berth in the Class M State Tournament.

Law finished the regular season with a 7-9 record and were the #19 seed in States where they fell to #14 Tolland. 

Junior starter Katherine Cepetelli played a huge role in the team’s success this season.

“We were doing our typical practices and film sessions as well as fun practices to get us more bonded,” Cepetelli said. “We can’t wait for the next season to come around.” 

Junior midfielder Chloe Konareski finished the season making the All-SCC Second Team 

“I feel the season went well,” Konareski said. “One of our biggest goals was to make states and we accomplished that. Our coaches did a great job of helping us improve and there was a big change in how we played from our first to last game.”

Law had a new head coach this season, Chloe Oliver, as well as new assistant coaches Mr. Beardsley and Haley Byers.

Junior Lily Baird has high hopes for next year when the season comes around. 

“It was a great season this year with the new coaches,” Baird said. “Hopefully next season we will be able to break 10 wins.”

After what is considered to be one of the best seasons for the girls lacrosse team, many players coaches and fans are looking forward to what is to come next season.

Jonathan Law recently wrapped its baseball regular season with a record of 9-11.

The Lawmen ended their season with a 9-1 win over Bunnell. They won their final two games of the regular season which qualified them for the State Tournament.

“I think the season went pretty well,”  senior captain Alex Bludevich said. “We had our early struggles, but we overcame them and ended the season strong as we got ready for the state tournament.”

The Lawmen started the year 3-7 but finished out the year strong, going 6-4 down the stretch. 

“One of our goals was to make the State Tournament, and we did that,” junior Connor Woods said. “That was a big accomplishment and we are looking to go far in the tournament and compete for a State Championship”

Bludevich is a captain of this year’s team along with seniors Declan Wywoda and Hunter Hoxie. 

“I think one thing we will continue to stress next season is the mindset with which we approach practices and games,” Assistant Coach Mr. McPartland said. “Our players understand that every practice and game could be their last and when we practice and play like that, good things tend to happen. We will continue to have an aggressive mindset and look to make things happen as opposed to waiting for things to happen.”

The Lawmen intend to go far in this year’s Class M playoffs, and next year, they hope to improve their regular season record too.

“This schedule helped us prepare for next season, we had a very difficult schedule but we were still able to come through and get ourselves into the playoffs,” junior Christian Galligan said. “We have a lot of returning players and we know how to win against tough competitors.”

The Lawmen have many returning players with varsity experience so thye hope to use this going forward and use it as momentum to help grow younger players. 

“My favorite part of the year was watching the team grow and get better at the game that we all love,” junior Micheal Merchant said. “I also enjoyed making States and we are working hard to go far and get a ring.”

The Jonathan Law girls tennis team has taken the final swings of its 2024 regular season.

Law finished with a record of 10-10 and qualified for the Class L State Tournament. They will host a first round match on Friday, March 24.

The team was led this year by senior captains Isabella Gecaj, Chloe Haasch, Moulika Sivalenka, and Kaitlyn Goldberg.

“One of our biggest goals this season was to make states,” Sivalenka said. “We did that as a team by always cheering each other on and improving our game during practice.”

After losing four key starters from last year, Law went through a rebuilding process in the beginning stages of the season. Nevertheless, the team continued to improve – one swing at a time. 

“This year, our team showed the power of hard work,” Head Coach Mr. Kulenych said. “We lost some of our best players from last year’s team, we had the most difficult schedule we have had in years, and most of the girls were playing much higher in the lineup than they played last year, but they were determined to grind out matches and get better every day.”

Law earned wins over Sheehan (twice), Lyman Hall (twice), West Haven (twice), Platt Tech (twice), Shelton, and Sacred Heart Academy – a team they had not beaten in six years.

Singles players this season were Gecaj (1 singles), sophomore Harshitha Kothapalli (2 singles), freshman Courtney Russo (3 singles), and Goldberg (4 singles). The doubles teams for much of the season were senior Kayla Nastasia/junior Kacey Pagaduan (1 doubles), Haasch and junior Brianna Madelung (2 doubles), and Sivalenka/sophomore Siya Patil (3 doubles).

Off the court, it was important for the team to participate in team bonding activities. The captains encouraged every player to cheer each other on to create a supportive and fun environment during games and practice. 

“Having everyone get loose and joke around whether that be at pasta parties or just fun games at practice can be a great way to build that team chemistry,” Gecaj said. “It really does make a difference when the match gets tough and you have your teammates there to support you.” 

With the States Tournament approaching, Law is excited to show off its skills.

“The team is preparing for states by taking some well needed rest and then getting back in with four days of practice leading into our first states match,” Haasch said. “We are also super excited for our pasta party to get hype and team bond.”

Throughout the season, everyone on the team worked hard to volley their way to success and dedicated themselves to the team. 

“This season I truly felt what it meant to be part of a team,” Kothapalli said. “I’ve never been a part of a more dedicated and hardworking team and I can’t wait to continue that energy in future seasons.”

Kulenych said he was proud of the character and determination the girls showed all-season long.

Junior lacrosse player Chloe Konareski and senior lacrosse captain Jesse Viens have been named Law’s April Student-Athletes of the Month. 

Konareski who recently scored the 100th goal of her career, was ecstatic to learn she won this month’s honor. She recently scored eight goals in one game and is happy to see her hard work paying off. 

“I think the qualities of being Athlete of the Month is to be hard working, have a positive attitude, be a team player, have a strong mindset of determination and be a leader,” Konareski said.

A star and leader not only on the field but also on the basketball court, Konareski helped to lead the girls basketball team to the SCC and State Tournament this past season. 

“I believe Chloe is deserving of athlete of the month because she has a depth of knowledge of lacrosse that she is always looking to share and she is a role model for the athletic spirit,” head coach Chloe Oliver said. 

Konareski has gotten recognition from GameTime CT a handful of times this year. One feature came from the April 17 version for her seven goals to lead Law past Notre Dame-Fairfield to secure the win.

“I think that I was nominated for Athlete of the Month because of my work ethic and hard work being shown in games,” Konareski said. “It’s satisfying seeing my hard work and all the time I put into the game being recognized.” 

While Konareski has been stellar for the girls team leading them to qualify for the state tournament, Viens has been the star of the boys team. Viens, who is a midfielder for the team, has been unstoppable on offense. 

“Jesse has been a focal point on the boys lacrosse team this season,” head coach Frank Skawinski said. “As a midfielder, Jesse will play both offense and defense and is instrumental in helping with the clear game.”

Viens is not only a key player for the lacrosse team but a key player for the football team and has committed to play at Louisburg College, but hopes to continue his lacrosse career with their club team. 

“I think I was nominated Athlete of the Month because I put in the time and effort to be good and it shows in games,” Viens said. “Being athlete of the month feels good because I have been putting in a lot of work trying to do as best as I can for my team.”

Viens has paced the offense with 35 goals in 15 games and recently led the team with three goals in a win over Norwich Tech. He said he draws inspiration from his sports idols in football and lacrosse.

“Some role models I have in sports are Brandon Aubrey who plays for the Cowboys and Paul Rabil who plays in the Premier Lacrosse League,” Viens said. 

Viens is happy he was able to be awarded with this honor before he graduates from Law next month.

The Law baseball season is in full swing and one of the team’s most valuable players has been senior pitcher Hunter Hoxie.

Hoxie is one of three senior captains on this years’s team along with Declan Wywoda and Alex Bludevich.

Hoxie, who has been committed to Rutgers University since his sophomore year, has led Law on the mound and with his work ethic. He said he takes his role as captain very seriously.

“Being captain I have a little bit of control over the team and I’m able to guide them” Hoxie said.  

Law Head Coach Mr. Simler said he knew early on in Hoxie’s career that he would be a standout performer.

“Hunter has progressed all of the years he has been here at Jonathan Law,” Simler said. “From the time he was in 9th grade, we knew he would end up a good pitcher because of his tremendous work ethic.” 

Hoxie has been labeled as a great leader and role model by many, especially by his co-captain Wywoda.

“Hunter is a great leader and is great at showing examples to everyone and making sure everyone is on track and staying focused,” Wywoda said. “He makes sure that we are all working towards the common goal of being the team we want to be.” 

Hoxie is excited to continue his baseball career at Rugers next year.

“At first it was pressuring being committed during my sophomore year but I got used to it and it’s very relieving and honoring from a college standpoint,” Hoxie said.

Junior Katherine Cepetelli, a standout player on the Law girls lacrosse team, has made significant impacts with her talent and infectious enthusiasm.

Cepetelli’s teammates admire her not only for her talent but her uplifting attitude and dedication to improve.

“Katherine has great stick work,” junior Lily Baird said. “She puts a lot of time and effort into the game.”

Cepetelli sheds some light on her own personal goals for the rest of the season. 

“My goals for this season are to become closer with some of the girls on the team,” Cepetelli said. “I want to score more and improve myself as a whole.” 

Her teammates emphasize her commitment to enhance her skills through hard work and commitment. 

“What makes Katherine such a good lacrosse player is her strong work ethic and drive to get better everyday,” junior Chloe Konareski said. 

Cepetelli’s positivity and encouragement echo throughout the team. 

“Katherine is constantly picking other people up when they’re down,” Baird said. “She has a positive attitude everyday.”

Cepetelli has a specific routine that she likes to follow before game days. 

“I prepare for games by having pasta parties with the team so we all get a chance to bond before the game,” Cepetelli said. “I practice at home as well to create a good mindset for the upcoming game!” 

Her determination and love for the sport does not go unrecognized. 

“Katherines biggest strength is her motivation and mentality,” Konareski said. “ She motivates others on the team and is a good influence to the younger girls.”

Cepetelli’s impact transcends her performance on the field, shaping the spirit for the entire team.

Halfway through the 2024 baseball season, Jonathan Law is looking to secure a spot in the Class M State Tournament. 

Law currently has a record of 5-8 with wins over Cheshire (twice), Hamden, East Haven, and West Haven.

One of the key players this season for the Lawmen has been sophomore outfielder Brady O’Neil. He and his teammates are determined to win at least three more games and return to states.

“My goals for the team is to make the state tournament,” O’Neil said. “We have the skills to do it we just have to work on applying them in game.”

O’Neil was moved up to varsity for the state tournament last season. Going into the offseason, he worked on his skills to be able to start varsity this year.

“I prioritized working on my offensive skills during the offseason as that was a big issue with our team last year,” O’Neil said. “I landed a spot on the varsity batting rotation and now it’s all about getting as many hits as I can.”

O’Neil is one of two sophomores in the regular starting lineup for Law. 

“Brady’s an excellent example for young guys that it doesn’t matter what year you are or your experience, if you just work hard you’ll get to play,” Assistant Coach Mr. McPartland said. “His motivation and determination should be the standard for how hard young incoming players should work.”

McPartland said O’Neil sets an excellent example to current freshman.

“Brady showed me that even though I’m only a freshman I can play on varsity with enough hard work,” freshman Seamus Fedigan said.

O’Neil brings refined skills to the offense. His fielding skills are also very exceptional.

“Brady’s very athletic and always performs his best on offense and defense,” sophomore Nick Cosmas said. “He has a very strong swing and uses his athleticism to his advantage while on defense.”

O’Neil is looking forward to the rest of the season and achieving his goals as the Lawmen look to sneak into the Class M State Tournament.

With the 2024 spring outdoor track season in full swing, the Jonathan Law girls track team is hoping for another successful year.

Sophomore Molly Croce has been one of the key members of the girls outdoor track team this season. At such a young age, Croce has impacted the team very much. 

Croce has already qualified for states and SCC’s and will compete in those during May. 

“So far the season has gone very well,” Croce said. “I have made new personal records, made states in all of my events, including two relays.”

Croce is a sprinter and runs one personal event and two relays. She runs the 100 meters, 4×100 relay, and the 4×400 relays. On her 4×100 team is also senior Caden Simpson, freshman Emily Vella, and sophomore Andrea Crump. The 4×400 team is Croce, sophomore Layla Alogna, junior Natalia Michnick, and freshman Talia Hagan.

“Molly’s times have improved drastically from last year,” senior captain Hailey Russo said. “She is a great leader for under and upperclassmen and has a bright future in track.”

Croce has many goals she would like to achieve before the season comes to an end.

“One of my big goals for this year is to break the school record for the 4×100 relay,” Croce said. “ We have a strong team and a great chance of reaching that goal with a lot of practice and hard work.”

Croce also makes time to help her teammates when struggling. She focuses on supporting others and showing she cares about her friends and teammates. 

“Molly is always there for me as a teammate and is someone who will give me advice and someone to hangout with during practices and meets,” sophomore Charlotte Balderi said. “She is always someone who pushes me to be a better runner.”

With having the experience from indoor track, Croce has been able to practice and improve for months now.

By preparing for the meets Croce works on speed, endurance, and fitness. This all helps her for meets and be successful. 

“Molly inspires me with her positive attitude on and off the track,” freshman Emily Vella said. “She is always focused when she is running but once she is done, she hangs out, cheers people on, and has fun.”

Croce is looking forward to the rest of the season and accomplishing many of her goals.

Sophomore Harshitha Kothapalli has started off her second year on the Law varsity girls tennis team strong.

Kothapalli’s record so far this season is 6-4. She has been a key player who has greatly contributed to the team’s success so far this year.

“My personal goals for this season are to have a good record and to be able to make states personally and SCCs,” Kothapalli said.

The team has been conditioning and practicing since early March. They work towards getting better every day.

“We’ve been practicing every chance we get, highlighting our weaknesses, and making sure we can adapt quickly on the court to any of our opponents,” Kothapalli said.

Kothapalli, who plays second singles for Law, has several individual and team goals for the year. 

“My goal for the team is to be able to make states by winning eight matches,” Kothapalli said. “But more importantly, my goal for the team is to make sure that we’re a tight-knit group that trust each other and learn from one another.”

Head Coach Mr. Kulenych pushes Kothapalli every day. 

“Harshi has established herself this season as one of the best players on our team,” Kulenych said. “She stepped up from doubles to singles this year and has improved every match. She worked extremely hard this offseason and all of that hard work has paid off for sure.”

Kothapalli has been playing tennis from a very young age. She grew up around the sport and has much love for it. She brings that love and passion to the tennis team.

“The biggest thing I love about tennis is the joy I receive from it,” Kothapalli said. “I’ve been playing tennis my whole life and I would not know what to do without it. Whenever I have free time I think of tennis so being able to share that love with my teammates is such an amazing feeling.”

Kulenych said that Kothapalli’s attitude and work ethic have helped her reach the level of success she has had over her first two high school seasons.

“Harshi’s biggest strength is her determination on the court,” Kulenych said. “She has battled through some injuries this year, but she never gives up and fights for every point. She is also a tremendous teammate who brings a lot of fire and personality to the team.”

Freshmen Lily Stankevich and Alexander Konlian were both named March Student Athletes of the Month. 

Both Stankevich and Konlian start on varsity and play key roles on their team. Stankevich is the starting second baseman on the softball team and Konlian plays midfield for the boys lacrosse team.

“I think of qualities like commitment and time management,” Stankevich said. “I think balancing academics and sports need responsibility and teamwork.”

Stankevich was also a gymnast for Law in the winter. Before coming to Law, she went to both the Little League World Series and the Junior League World Series. 

“I feel proud and happy about being Athlete of the Month,” Stankevich said. “It shows the hard work that I have put into my sport, and that brings me a sense of accomplishment.”

Stankevich is hitting second on the team and is consistently getting on base. Stankevich is always putting the work outside of practice and in practice. 

Konlian is doing the same for boys lacrosse. He keeps his grades up in school and keeps working hard on the field. 

“I have two study periods to work in and practice is usually from 4-6 p.m., I can do work before and after,” Konlian said. “I have to plan to get my homework done before the days I have games.”

Konlian worked extremely hard to be starting varsity and his work has paid off. 

“It feels super good winning Athlete of the Month – at the time I was surprised and shocked but I am mostly excited and happy about it,” Konlian said. “The qualities that I think define me as a student athlete are working in school and on the field.”

Law softball coach Mrs. Blude is very excited that one of her players got named Student Athlete of the Month. 

“It is impressive for a freshman to have such a great start to their season,” Blude said “She worked hard all winter and it is paying off.”

The Jonathan Law boys lacrosse season kicked off March 31 against Lyman Hall.

As of April 17, the team has a record of 4-3 with wins against Notre Dame of Fairfield, Ledyard, Wilbur Cross, and Norwich Tech, and losses to Foran, North Haven, and Lyman Hall. 

This year, the team welcomes a new head coach, Frank Skawinski, who formerly coached at Notre Dame-Fairfield.

Senior captain Dylan Wargo and junior Nathan Marroquin have been key players for the Lawmen so far this season.

“I like the environment that the new coaching staff has created for the team,” Marroquin said.

The team has working on their conditioning to stay strong and healthy for the season so they can achieve their goals. 

“We had two weeks of conditioning, we ran sprints, we did dynamic warmups and we did strength and conditioning in the weight room,” junior Basel Chwiki said. “These helped us get stronger and faster and in shape before the season.”

Senior goalie Aiden Stassun is working towards his goals while trying to help the team reach states.

“My goal for the season is to make states,” Stassun said. “But for my own personal goal I want to get over 400 career saves.”

Freshman Henry Smith is adjusting well to high school lacrosse.

“It’s a bigger commitment than during youth,” Smith said. “A lot more time is being spent on lacrosse and I’m playing against all kinds of different age groups unlike before.”

Junior Tim Firla is another one of the key starters for Law this season.

“I’m excited to see what this season will bring us,” Firla said.

The Jonathan Law girls tennis team has hit the courts and is off to a solid start this season.

The girls currently have a 4-4 record with wins over Shelton, West Haven, Sheehan, and Lyman Hall. The team is halfway to one of its preseason goals of winning at least eight matches and returning to the State Tournament for the fifth straight year.

“The season is turning out pretty well,” senior co-captain Moulika Sivalenka said. “We have expected wins and losses, but we are fighting hard every match. Here and there we might falter a little, but our team spirits are always high and we always support each other during matches.” 

This year’s captains are seniors Isabella Gecaj, Chloe Haasch, Kaitlyn Goldberg, and Sivalenka.

Key singles players this season include Gecaj, Goldberg, sophomore Harshitha Kothapalli, and freshman Courtney Russo. Key doubles players include Haasch, Sivalenka, senior Kayla Nastasia, junior Kacey Pagaduan, junior Brianna Madelung, sophomore Siya Patil, and junior Carol Jiang.

Kothapalli said she is proud of the way the team has navigated a difficult schedule to start the year.

“I think we’ve done well on being able to recover from playing hard teams,” Kothapalli said. “We try to always learn from our mistakes and bring the same level of dedication and determination to each match.”

Head Coach Mr. Kulenych has high expectations that he feels the girls will meet this season.

“This is one of the hardest-working and most dedicated groups of girls we’ve ever had,” Kulenych said. “They trained so hard in the offseason and I’m excited to see how all of that hard work pays off. We have a good mix of experience and new talent, and if we keep our focus on getting a little better every day, we should have a very successful season.”

The team is very well connected and friendly with each other and has a very tight-knit bond. The captains and seniors emphasize this with team bonding activities often and they feel its brought them closer together.

“My favorite thing about Law girls tennis would be the team bond,” Gecaj said. “Everyone is really close and it’s something you don’t always see on a team. Everyone has a lot of respect for each other and it’s great to see so many good sports all on one team.”

The Jonathan Law boys track team is back with high hopes for the 2024 outdoor season.

After a great season last year, the Lawmen are looking to repeat and improve on last year’s results.

Junior captain Brayden Hancock said he has personal goals for himself and the team.

“I want to be the best I can for myself and the team,” Hancock said. “I’m looking forward to our upcoming meet at Branford.” 

In the team’s first meet of the season, DJ Wilder (high jump, long jump, triple jump) and Jack Bretthauer (100M, 200M, 400M) qualified for States in three events. Also qualifying for States were Cam Upchurch (high lump), Joe Richardson (pole vault), JT Nelly (long jump), Dash Gassen (110 HH), Faisal Karzoun (100M, 200M) and Tyson Boehm (javelin).

In Law’s second meet, and first meet on the new home track, the Lawmen defeated Foran and Platt Tech.

Senior Zack Sulkis said he is impressed with the performances so far from the team’s throwers.

“I like the effort I’m seeing out of all the throwers and I love seeing the younger talent develop,” Sulkis said.  “We have freshman throwing close to SCC numbers after two meets and I’m convinced we’re only going to get better from here. I’m just hoping our fat-man relay dominates this year to keep the tradition alive.” 

With the loss of some seniors last year, the Lawmen have been relying on several underclassmen to fill the gaps.

“The team has me all over the place and it’s fun to try new events all the time,” junior Cesar Mendez said. “I enjoy watching other people succeed in their event and watch every player grow.”

The Jonathan Law golf team is excited to get started this season after making the State Tournament last year. 

The team has many returning players including captain Jaden Archuleta and other key players. 

“I’m excited to get the season started after having a very successful season last year,” Archuleta said. “The rest of them is also very excited and we are looking to return to the State Tournament like we did last year.”

The team members have set individual goals for themselves as well as the team setting their own collective goals. 

“One of my goals is to play in every match and to try and shoot into the 40s this year so I could be right up their with the starters on the team for every match,” junior Harry Fisher said. 

The team has set one collective goal for themselves that they are working towards every day. 

“Our team goals for the season are to stay consistent, compete with the other team that we play which will lead us to have a strong chance to have a top team score in the State Tournament,” senior Tanner Matchett said.

The team practices three to four days a week at courses around Milford to prepare for the matches throughout the season. 

“One thing I am looking forward to is getting out on the course everyday as well as improving my scores and becoming a better golfer,” Fisher said. “I am also looking forward to getting tips from my teammates and how we can improve each other’s swings.” 

So far this season, Law has three wins in its first four matches. 

“The season has been great so far,” Coach Mr. Maurutis said. “We have struggled with the weather, however my players are playing well and I can’t ask for a better bunch of kids, they are already coming together as a team.”

With the 2024 season underway, Jonathan Law is hoping to have a great year of baseball.

After making the Class M State Tournament last year, the Lawmen have high hopes this year. Law has six players who have committed to play college baseball and has been working extremely hard to prepare for the season.

So far, the team is off to a 2-4 start with wins over Hamden and Cheshire with losses to Foran and New Canaan. One of the key players in the team’s wins so far this year is junior Michael Merchant.

Merchant, who is committed to Rutgers University, helped the Lawmen in the win against Hamden where he drove in three runs to help the team come out with a win.

“My goal for myself is to keep our team alive with a lot of energy and my goal for the team is to win the State Championship,” Merchant said. “I am working to get better on a daily basis is also part of my goal.” 

Merchant also talked about the type of intense preparation the team has done to improve. 

“We have been doing a lot of conditioning, especially during the offseason,” Merchant said. “All of our hitting and the defensive drill work we did is starting to show.” 

Merchant’s work ethic and positive attitude shine through in practice and on the baseball field. 

“We have a very good pitching staff and everyone worked hard during the off-season,” Merchant said. “We continue to put in a lot of effort and work hard during our daily hitting sessions to ensure our hitting is sharp.” 

With a quarter of the baseball season completed, the Lawmen are hungry to win as many games as possible to get back to the State Tournament.

Jonathan Law’s girls track team is starting up its 2024 spring season.

Law has several home meets this season and will look to set as many individual and team records as possible. 

“This outdoor season, I am excited to try new events,” senior Caden Simpson said. “I will be competing in high jump and longer distance races, which will help me get ready for college.” 

Simpson is a captain on the team and holds multiple school records like the 110M hurdles and then 300M hurdles. Simpson has committed to run Division I track at Monmouth University.

Other key members of the girls track team are senior Lexi Borecki, who broke her own school recor din the pole vault in Law’s season-opening meet against North Haven, and senior Claire Moulton.

“I’m most excited for the invitational meets with the 4×800 relay team,” Moulton said. “A goal of mine that I have is making SCCs and States.”

On top of many returning athletes from last season, Law also has many freshmen and sophomores who have joined this year.

“I’m most excited to experience the process of an outdoor meet and cheering on others on the team,” sophomore Fiorella Gargiulo said. “This is my first year doing outdoor track, so I’m excited to run with my friends as the weather gets warmer.”

The team is most excited for their upcoming meet against Foran High School and Platt Tech in what has been dubbed the “Milford City Championship.”

Senior Jessica Brocksom is of Law’s most experience returning throwers.

“For myself, I will be attempting different strategies for throwing and for others I hope to give them advice on form and strategies that will benefit them best,” Brocksom said.

The girls track team has been very successful in recent years and hopes to continue that this season.

“I’m most excited for the meets this season,” junior Olivia Pisacane said. “ The team is always there for each other and I’m excited to get into the season.”

The Jonathan Law boys tennis team has started the spring season with a new mindset and by serving up victories. 

The team is off to a 2-3 start to the season with wins over Hamden and North Haven.

“This year we’re more dedicated than ever and play every match to the best of our abilities,” senior captain Srivarsh Gudlavalleti said. “We’ve already started off the season on a better foot and I can’t wait to see where it heads.”

Their biggest goal this season is to make states as a team, meaning they will have to win eight matches. 

“We aim to use the growth and camaraderie we’ve built together to exceed our performance from last season,” senior captain Jon Uruchida said. 

Law has also gained three freshmen starters – Ryan Berendt, Dylan Maselli, and Pierce Marini – which has increased the depth of their team.

“(The upperclassmen) try to create a friendly environment where freshmen feel welcome and part of the team,” senior Saharsh Bhatia said. “My goal is to step up and set an example for the freshmen.”

Captains Gudlavalleti, Uruchida, and Arshaq Ahmed all fulfill their duties through a myriad of aspects from leading practices by teaching gameplay and drills to making sure that each of their teammates are physically and mentally ready for matches. 

“Our main idea this year is to make states, but it’s also really important that we work together and create friendships and experiences on the journey,” Gudlavalleti said. 

Each one of their players is laser-focused through their consistent and structured practices. 

“We’ve been working on being able to address our weaknesses and tackle them so that in a match we can quickly adjust to our opposition,” Bhatia said. 

Uruchida knows that all the boys on the team have worked long and hard but also realizes that the nerves are unmatchable.

“To combat the nervous feeling, before every match, we have a team huddle where we motivate each other through speeches and a group chant,” Uruchida said. “This allows the boys to know that we’re in it together.”

While the team has its own objectives, junior Sean Luxeder maintains his personal goals. 

“My goal this season is to have a winning record and to be able to adapt and strategize quickly on the court,” Luxeder said.

The Jonathan Law girls lacrosse team has hit the turf running for the spring season.

The team, with the help of their brand new coaching staff, has been practicing countless hours to prepare for this season. 

Law’s new head coach, Chloe Oliver, graduated from Foran in 2021 and played goalie for the Albertus Magnus lacrosse team. Oliver is ready to take the next step in the game of lacrosse by coaching at Law.

“My favorite part about coaching so far has been watching the girls grow and learn together,” Oliver said. “They definitely have a natural tendency to lift each other up.” 

Apart from the new coaching staff, a number of new players have joined the team this year

“This being the first time I have ever picked up a stick,” freshman Jocelyn Larracuente said. “I’ve really gotten to be a lot more familiar with the game with the help of my teammates and coaches.” 

With all of these adjustments, the team often sticks together by participating in bonding activities including pre-game rituals. 

“We typically have pasta parties the day before a game in order to build a stronger bond as a team and to get us in the zone together,” senior captain Zoe Johnson said. 

Players have set goals both individual and team goals for this season. Some of these goals may include breaking goal records, improving their speed, or increasing their playing time.

Senior Helen Chizmazia has been on the team for four years and was named a captain this year. 

“This season, I definitely came in with a lot more determination and drive than I’ve had before,” Chizmazia said. “Setting expectations for myself as a player in addition to having coaches that constantly implement so much positivity in practice has helped my hold myself accountable this season.”

Law has played four games so far this season and junior Chloe Konareski recently earned her 100th career goal at an away game vs. Lyman Hall. 

“I was really excited to make my 100th career goal,” Konereski said. “I have been working hard in the off season which I believe allowed me to have this accomplishment.”

The team utilizes their strong dynamic and bond to their advantage not only during the toughest of games but even celebrating each other at practices.  

With all of the hard work, dedication, and positivity ready to put into this upcoming season, the team is hopefully looking to grow this season. 

“The girls lacrosse program at Law is a fairly new program,” Assistant Coach Mr. Beardsley said. “I remember I was in high school when the team was started around my sophomore year. To see first hand how far the program has come since then has been awesome and just proves how much more growth is possible.”

The Jonathan Law baseball team is anxious and ready for the season to start. 

The Lawmen open on March 30 at home against New Milford with the first varsity pitch at 11 a.m. The team has been preparing very hard for this game since spring tryouts started on March 16. 

“Our team has been preparing by playing in 4 scrimmages over the course of about a week and a half,” senior captain Hunter Hoxie said. “This will help us get everyone used to pitching to batters and hitting against live pitching.” 

Along with Hoxie, the captains for this season are Alex Bludevich and Declan Wywoda. 

“Our main goal is to be playing for a state championship in June,” Assistant Coach Mr. McPartland said. “However, we are fully aware that in order to accomplish that long-term goal, we must have several micro-goals. Everyday at practice we strive to get a little bit better. ”

The Lawmen lost a handful of seniors last year, but know they have kids who will fill those roles. 

“My two goals this season are to make the state tournament and make the SCC tournament as well,” Wywoda said. “I think our team is very talented and we have the potential to have a special year.”

The team has lots of talent including five seniors who are committed to play baseball in college. Wywoda is committed to George Washington University and Hoxie and junior Michael Merchant are committed to Rutgers University.

“I am really excited to see what the team will bring when the season starts, we have been playing great in our scrimmages,” Merchant said. “I am also very excited to see how our team works together and continues to grow and get better everyday.”

Senior pitcher Brian Goglia, who is committed to Virginia Commonwealth University, agreed with Merchant, and said how eager he was for the season to start. 

“Goals for this season team wise, is to work hard on our offense and apply it to games,” senior Jaxson Smith said. “We have a great pitching staff, we just need to put runs up on the board.” 

After a strong run in the Class M state tournament, going to the second round and falling short to St. Joseph High School last year, the team believes this year will be better.  

“As a team, I think this is the year to make a run at the championship. If we can stay healthy and have all of our players on the field at all times, we are a very dangerous team,” Wywoda said. “Every player on our roster is very valuable and anyone can play at any time and make a huge impact.”

Freshman Selena Batres recently made history by becoming the became the 100 pound girls state wrestling champion.

Batres followed up that performance with a fourth place showing at the New England Girls Wrestling Tournament. Before coming to Law, Batres trained for many years with the South Side Wrestling Club. 

“It feels good to be a state champ, and rep my team,” Batres said. “Ever since I started wrestling when I was younger, it was always a goal of mine to win states, and to do it my freshman year feels very rewarding.”

Batres was not the only Law girls wrestler to have an impressive postseason.

During the state tournament, senior Marissa Wargo came in fourth place at 114 pounds in the final meet of her high school career. This was the third time during her career that Wargo placed in the tournament.

“Selena is a dedicated young wrestler that is determined to compete,” Assistant Coach Mr. Ruzbarsky said.

Other notable placements in the girls state tournament were freshman Nicoletta Pacifico, who finished with two wins and two losses at 114 pounds; junior Sophia Abbaspour, who finished with two wins and two losses at 120 pounds; sophomore Mackenzie Nichols, who finished with one win and two losses at 126 pounds; and sophomore Meghan Velasquez, who finished with two wins and two losses at 152 pounds.

“I think it’s awesome seeing our younger wrestlers thrive,” Sulkis said. “I would love to see this program thrive in the future when I graduate. Selena has a lot of experience and is a real hard worker. When you put in the work she has, the results she gets aren’t shocking seeing her dominate.”

Alex Bludevich is starting his senior season for the Jonathan Law baseball team and is striving to help the team win as many games as possible.

Bludevich and the rest of the team are ready for the season. He and his teammates have put in a lot of work at conditioning and getting togethers to get ready for tryouts and the start of the season.

The team has begun playing scrimmages and practicing to put themselves in the best shape possible to beat any challenges they may face. Bludevich is one of Law’s captains and veteran leaders and has earned the respect of the team’s underclassmen.

“He’s a great leader, always the first one at the field and last one off it, always working hard and giving the team a great example of a true leader,” sophomore Aidan Rascati said.

Bludevich has been playing baseball for basically his whole life. He is devoted to the game and shows his true determination and love for the sport.

“Alex is a great example of what everyone wants to be like, a true captain,” sophomore Brady O’Neil said. “He really shows a lot of heart and passion to the game and will do whatever it takes to help his team win in any situation against any opponent. He helps the team out in many ways and leads by example.”

Bludevich said he takes his role of captain seriously.

“Baseball has always been in my heart,” Bludevich said. “Ever since I was little playing with my family, I take it very seriously because it means the world to me. This season I am going to try my hardest to help the team out in as many ways as possible. I am glad to be a leader because I get to help others accomplish their goal while still accomplishing my own. Having leaders on the team is important because it helps hold the team together and having someone there to lend a hand when needed.”

Sophomore Roman Belbita is ready to face off with the Law boys lacrosse team this spring. 

Belbita contributed to the varsity lacrosse team as a freshman last season. He was a key scorer, knocking down shots not shying away from the competition. 

“I want to help build up the program and help the team get a winning record this year,” Belbita said. “That starts with working with my teammates everyday and helping each other get better.”

Belbita brings many offensive skills to the field this year. He strives to get better everyday in practice. 

“I think this year Roman will bring new and refined skills to the offensive side of the field, and eagerness to learn and get better,” senior captain Dylan Wargo said.

Teammates said that Belbita is a hard worker and always pushes to compete. His hard work and dedication makes him a strong player.

“Roman’s hard work makes him great at getting up and down the field,” freshman Alex Konlian said. “He’s great at helping us clear the ball and scoring.”

Belbita obtained an elbow injury earlier in the year, but that has not stopped him from working hard. 

“Roman adapts to the changes and challenges thrown at him with a positive outlook,” junior Tucker Donegan said. “He doesn’t focus on the negative impact in the situation.”

Belbita has learned and been through a lot with ups and downs in the past season. He is looking forward to this season because of how prepared and comfortable he is.

“Everyday I try to get better than I was yesterday,” Belbita said. “Working hard doesn’t just benefit you but it benefits your team as well which is a big goal of mine.”

Belbita has made sure to be an active member of the team, constantly showing up to captain’s practices, lifts, and conditioning. 

“Being consistent and active with the team is only going to make us better,” Belbita said. “With my injury this year I wasn’t as physical as I wished I was so I made sure I attended conditionings and captain’s practices.”

Several Jonathan Law seniors are getting ready to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. 

Over the last few weeks, a number of Law athletes have committed to perform at the next level and are excited for the challenge. 

Senior Caden Simpson will be running Division I track at Monmouth University next year. She holds multiple records at Law including the 110M hurdles and the 300M hurdles. 

“I feel really fortunate to run on a collegiate level,” Simpson said. “I worked hard to get where I am and being able to continue doing what I love in college is exciting and nerve-racking.”

Senior JT Nelly will be playing football at the Naval Academy Prep School for one year and then playing at the Coast Guard Academy for the next four years. Nelly was a captain of Law’s football team and is a captain for the track team. 

“It feels great to be able to compete at the next level,” Nelly said. “I am doing a lot to prepare myself such as working out and going to the field often, and making sure my grades are still high for the end of the year transcript. Track is helping with my preparation and keeping me explosive as I gain weight and muscle.” 

Senior Jack Bretthauer will be running Division I track at Iona University. Bretthauer is a captain of Law’s track team. 

“I am looking forward to the high level I will be able to compete at along with the new resources and tools I will gain access to as I continue to collegiate track,” Bretthauer said. 

Senior Eliot Melgar will be playing soccer at Eastern Connecticut State University. Melgar was a captain of the Law soccer team and led the team in goals scored last season.

“I’m most looking forward to getting to play the sport I enjoy and to improve by challenging myself with harder opposition to improve my own skillset,” Melgar said. “I also look forward to playing in games and helping my team be successful.”

Senior Bobby Black also recently announced that he will be playing baseball at Western New England University next year. 

“I look forward to playing the sport I love and to continue to compete and win with new teammates,” Black said.

The Jonathan Law girls basketball team recently completed a thrilling regular season with a 10-10 record.

After going winless last year, Law was able to qualify for both States and SCCs this season. 

“The team did very well this year,” junior Ella Franzman said. “We finished with a 10-10 in the regular season, qualifying for both the SCC and State Tournaments. Unfortunately, we lost in the first rounds of both tournaments but it was a huge improvement to make it there after having an 0-20 record last season.”

The team has two captains this year – senior Zoe Johnson and junior Chloe Konareski – who both set goals for the season. 

“The team set multiple goals this season,” Johnson said. “Our first goal was to win six games to qualify for States, as well as win 10 games to qualify for SCCs. We were able to achieve both of these goals this season.”

There were many memorable moments throughout the season, such as the team winning on Senior Night as well as qualifying for SCCs in their last game of the regular season. 

“My favorite moment this year was beating Lauralton Hall at home on Senior Night,” Franzman said. “When we played them away we didn’t play our best and lost, but then we were able to play at home and win our last regular season game which also happened to be Senior Night.”

Other key players for Law this season were sophomore Andrea Crump, junior Tessa Piselli, junior Haley Stroffolino, junior Taylor Coretti, and freshman Sadie Timmeny. The team loses only one senior, so most of the team is returning for next year. 

Returning members are already setting goals and working on their skills for next year where they look to make it back to the postseason. 

“I’m looking forward to working with my teammates over the summer and getting better so that next year we can have a winning record and again qualify for the post season tournaments and make a farther run,” Franzman said. “I’m also looking forward to playing one more season with some of my closest friends.”

After a hard-fought season, the Milford Mariners finished with a 4-15 record on the year.

Throughout the season, the young Mariners team continued to evolve as a team. They battled for pucks in the corner, worked the offensive zones, and showed a lot of growth and improvement.

During his first season as the head coach of the Mariners, JP Shimko worked hard to make sure the team was ready to have a successful season. Despite falling short of the State Tournament, Shimko was still extremely proud of the growth and work ethic the team showed over the course of the year.

“Although our goals were not met this season, we are very happy with our growth over this past year,” Shimko said. 

Shimko said his favorite moment from the season was beating Wilton 2-0 in Ridgefield.

“It was the way we won that game that made me so proud to be a part of this program,” Shimko said. “We played a complete game with everyone contributing in different ways. Specifically, our defensive group came together to shut down Wilton in the third to hold onto the lead. Our goalie, Aiden Riker, stood on his head to preserve the lead and get us the win. An all-around great effort from our group.”

Hunter Griffin, a senior captain from Law, was one of the important pieces on the Milford Mariners lineup. As a captain, Griffin motivated the team and encouraged each player to bring their game to a new level. He showcased his skills while scoring two goals against Norwalk/McMahon to help the Mariners take the victory.

Griffin said he created some incredible memories with the team this year.

“My favorite moment was when we beat Branford in the last 30 seconds of the game for a 4-3 win,”  Griffin said. “My goals this year were to lead the team as a captain and get as many wins as we could. This season both were accomplished.” 

The Mariners are now focused on working hard in the off-season to prepare for next season.

The Milford Co-Op boys swimming season recently ended with many swimmers qualifying for SCCs and states. 

Milford, which is made up of swimmers and divers from Law and Foran High School, recorded many impressive individual and team performances this season. The team even saw one school fall this winter – senior Dylan Morrissey broke the school diving record with a score of 216.6.

Senior captain Chris Rickard, the only Law captain on this year’s Co-Op team, said the team overcame many challenges this season but was happy with the way the season ended.

“It was challenging being the only captain from Law but being able to work with Foran’s captain and the team at Law being very open and cooperative with me it was much easier,” Rickard said. “The season this year was pretty good. We were able to out down a more competitive team and move up in the SCC.”

Junior Logan McCorkle was one of the team’s SCC qualifiers.

“This season, I think my biggest achievement was moving up to SCCs,” McCorkle said.

Sophomore Onuralp Unal made SCCs in one of swimming’s most difficult events – the 100 butterfly.

“My biggest achievement this year was qualifying for SCCs in the 100 fly,” Unal said. “It was challenging but I worked really hard and I’m happy I got the chance.” 

To achieve these accomplishments, team members had to work hard and get through some challenges. 

“For challenges, it was probably not doing club swimming so I didn’t have extra practice throughout the off season,” McCorkle said. 

Team members said that working hard every day at practice helped prepare them for each meet.

“Practices were challenging but they made me work harder and make my goals,” sophomore Yusuf Korkmaz said. “The season was good and I’m glad we made it to SCCs.”

Senior Dylan Wargo, the captain of the boys lacrosse team, is looking to turn heads this year and exceed expectations. 

This season the team has been working harder than ever and are motivated to win as many games as possible. Wargo is looking forward to this season and going into this year’s game with a different mentality and winning mindset.

“Being the captain means holding myself and teammates to a higher level of accountability,” Wargo said. “I plan on going into every game this year with the mentality of winning and goal of improving as a teammate and player.”

Wargo has faced many challenges throughout his years of being on this boys lacrosse team but this year he is looking forward to overcoming everything. He also can’t wait to go into every game with a confident mindset and ready to go.

“One of the challenges I faced was being confident in a leadership position,” Wargo said. “I overcame this by growing closer to my teammates and being more comfortable explaining expectations.” 

Going into this year, Wargo and his team have been conditioning, lifting in the weight room, and holding many captains practices to be as ready as possible for this season. This is the first year that they have been doing all of this before a season. 

“The biggest difference between this year and last is our consistency,” Wargo said. “We have had significantly more captain’s practices, lifts, conditionings, etc.”

Wargo, a captain for the first time in his high school career, has been trying to push and motivate his team more and more before the start of the season and will continue when the season starts.

“I motivate the team by trying to get everyone on the same page for the season so that everyone is prepared to put in work day to day,” Wargo said. “Along with this try to make the conditionings and practices enjoyable.” 

Wargo has learned and been through a lot with ups and downs in the past season with this team. He is looking forward to this season because of how prepared and comfortable he is.

“I learned a lot about training hard in practice, making sure each day I’m getting better,” Wargo said. “Training hard in practice translates to playing hard, making you a better player. This will benefit me this year because I’ll be able to make good improvements and be a core part of the team.”

Junior Tyler Davis, a standout player on Law’s lacrosse team, is not only a skilled athlete but also a leader who embodies the essence of teamwork and dedication. 

Davis’ exceptional abilities and commitment have become an important part of the team’s success. 

“What makes Tyler a good team player is his ability to communicate with his team on and off the field,” junior Thomas Rubenstein said. 

Davis’ leadership qualities have not gone unrecognized. 

“He is able to lead his team in the winning direction,” Rubenstein said. “Tyler knows what he’s going against and does not back down.”

Davis shed some light on his personal goals and offers insight on how he prepares for games.  

“One of my personal goals is to score,” Davis said. “I play defense so it is not that common.” 

He emphasizes the importance of listening to his coaches instruction and practicing repetitively. 

“I prepare for games by listening to my coach,” Davis said. “I like to make sure everyone on the team is ready to go and they know the game plan.”

His teammates see his devotion to the team and his ability to uplift and drive them to success. They highlight his infectious energy and determination.

“Tyler brings a lot of energy to the team,” junior Anthony Malave said. “He is strong and plays hard on the field.”

Davis is eagerly anticipating the upcoming season – which comes with the arrival of a new coach. He stresses the importance of making connections with teammates. 

“This year I’m looking forward to meeting the new coach,” Davis said. “I’m excited to build relationships with my teammates and have a fun season.”

Sophomore Sophia Scarpa is preparing for her second season on the Law varsity softball team.

Scarpa, a catcher for Law, is a great teammate who is goal-driven and dedicated to her sport. 

“She is always striving to better her craft and she is super coachable, listening to everything the coaches say,” Blude said.

Scarpa is dedicated and always works to her fullest potential.

“Last year, she came in as a freshman and immediately made an impact,” junior Ella Franzman said. “She was huge for us at the plate, she hit a few home runs, and had a lot of clutch hits.”

Scarpa’s work ethic and high energy impacts her teammates as well.

“My favorite quality of Soph as a softball player is that she can bring the mood up on the team if we’re down in the game, she’s the ultimate hype man,” sophomore Charlotte Doyle said. 

Scarpa is very encouraging and is brings a ton of positivity to the team.

“What makes Soph a good team player is that she always contributes to the team,” senior Grace Hess said. “She always cheers everyone and gives 100% no matter what. She is a team player.”

Even as a freshman last year, Scarpa’s leadership skills were evident.

“My favorite quality of Soph as a softball player is her hard work and dedication to the team,” sophomore Emily Roos said.

Senior captain Declan Wywoda is excited for the upcoming 2024 Jonathan Law baseball season.

Wywoda will help lead the Lawmen in many ways this spring – both as a captain and as a pitcher. 

“I plan on being a good leader by holding players accountable and making sure that everyone is working hard to benefit the team,” Wywoda said. “I plan on holding myself accountable as a leader to be a good example for younger players and be someone they look up to not only as a captain but as a friend as well.”

Wywoda has been with the team for all four years of his high school career. He has been leading the team since he was a freshman in many different ways. 

“In high school baseball a pitcher can take on more than 1 role during the season – a starter, middle reliever or closer at the end of the game,” Head Coach Mr. Simler said. “Declan is a very good pitcher that can help us in all of those pitching roles throughout the season.”

Wywoda is not very vocal but leads the team in many other ways. Assistant Coach Mr. McPartland hopes that every player follows Wywoda’s example. 

“He’ll influence the team most through his ability to lead by example,” McPartland said. “Declan is one of our captains this year and we want our other guys to emulate what he does.”

Many players on the team are inspired to follow Wywoda’s work ethic. 

“Declan doesn’t fool around and gets the job done,” senior captain Hunter Hoxie said “He will keep everyone focused and encourage them to play better.”

The team is looking to make it to the state tournament this year after not making it last year. They hope Wywoda’s pitching and leadership will help get them there.

“Declan is a great leader, he’s a great communicator, works well with everybody, and leads by example,” senior captain Alex Bludevich said. “He shows up every day looking to get better and for everyone around him to get better.” 

Junior Christian Galligan agreed.

“Declan will never bring anyone down, no matter who it is, or what they did wrong,” Galligan said. “Declan makes sure everyone keeps their heads up which is a huge key for success.”

The team has already started conditioning in order to get ready for the season. Many players have been practicing on their own, hoping it will help the team out during the season. 

“The goal for the season is to first qualify for states and then to go win the state championship,” senior Tyler Nethercot said.

The Jonathan Law boys basketball team recently wrapped up their winter season.

The team was led by three captains: Tanner Matchett, Cam Upchurch and Liam Valvo. While two of the captains are seniors, Upchurch, a junior, is excited to return to the court for one more season with the Lawmen. 

“There isn’t anything I wish I could have done differently this season,” Upchurch said. “Although we didn’t have the outcome we wanted and the success we wanted, I don’t look back and regret the decisions in the past because I live a no regrets lifestyle.”

Upchurch has been a starter for all three seasons and was a key part to the team this year. The Lawmen featured a lot of new faces on the court this season as they had to replace eight seniors from last year’s team.

“Adjusting was hard because we lost our main scorers and big men so we had to have a whole new plan of going about things and that was to use our speed to our advantage,” senior Derek Rainey said. “I feel like at first we did not adjust to using our speed well but after a couple games have  gone by we started to get the hang of it and adjusted much better.”

Law, who finished the year 4-16, is now looking forward to growing their program and hoping that the underclassmen will be able to step in and fill these roles as kids continue to graduate the team. 

“Losing talent is difficult every year,” head coach Jamie Anderson said. “This year we are losing nine seniors as well.” 

Along with Rainey, Matchett, and Valvo, the team will be losing seniors Amedues Betancourt, Bobby Black, Chris DeProfio, Michael Nieder, Patrick Paules-Harrold and Derek Wilder. 

“I’m going to miss the culture of the team, and mostly the relationships I built with my teammates and my coaches,” Valvo said.

Valvo, who injured his shoulder in the beginning of the season during a scrimmage, was unable to play in most games this year. Despite not being fully healed Valvo saw a few minutes on senior night when the team defeated Career Magnet 62-49. 

“The juniors, sophomores and freshmen have a lot of talent and are ready to work,” Rainey said. “They are good listeners and playmakers and will be fun to watch.” 

The program had a lot of underclassmen come out for the team this year and are excited for them to grow. 

“An underclassman that stepped up was Matt Witteman, a few games into the season he was brought up to varsity and eventually started which helped contribute a lot to the squad,” Upchurch said.

Witteman was excited to help out the team when he got told to sit on the varsity bench and then got told he would soon be starting for the team. 

“Our underclassmen made some really good strides this year,” Anderson said. “We knew there were going to be some mistakes and growing pains but they learned a lot and got very valuable experience.” 

The team is excited to work together in the offseason, as the CIAC has now allowed for teams to practice together for up to four hours a week once the final spring championship games have concluded. 

“I’m going to miss the culture of law basketball for sure, it feels like a family – from the coaches, to teammates, to the supporters,” Matchett said. “It was competitive and fun at the same time and definitely has been the highlight of my high school experience.”

Senior Derek Rainey is leading the Law boys basketball team down the stretch of the winter season.

Rainey has helped the team in many ways this year being a great scorer, knocking down shots, and not being afraid of the competition. He strives to play with heart and passion on the court and is always determined to do what it takes to come out with a victory.

“Derek’s energy is unmatched by anyone on the team,” senior captain Tanner Matchett said. “He is always giving 100% effort on and off the floor and always tries to push everyone around him to be the best they can.”

Rainey always pushes people to be better and always wants to compete. His mentality helps make him a strong player and leader to his entire team, as well as a role model for younger players.

“Although Derek has missed some time, battling illnesses and injuries, his work ethic has never faltered,” Assistant Coach Mr. McPartland said. “He works tirelessly on the court and has a ton of responsibility as one of our guards, which he has handled in stride.”

Rainey has persevered through illness and a concussion this season, but he stayed determined and put his best efforts forward to help his team achieve the goal of winning.

“Derek is known for his sharpshooting skills and relentless work ethic,” junior Dalton Evans said. “He is one of the go-to scorers when it comes down to the wire in crucial moments. He pushes his teammates to excel and tries to make them better.”

Both players and coaches said they feel comfortable with Rainey taking shots in crucial situations and he isn’t scared of the pressure that comes along with those shots.

“Derek is one of the best competitors on our team,” junior guard Ivan Gallicano said. “He plays a big role in our team and is a role model for younger players to look up to.”

Rainey said his goal this season was to be a leader on and off the court.

“I love being able to be a leader on and off the court, setting good examples for the younger classes and teaching them more advanced plays,” Rainey said. “I enjoy learning and gaining more knowledge about more ways to score and set up teammates to score during games.”

Seniors Tanner Matchett and Caden Simpson were named January’s Student-Athletes of the Month. 

Matchett and Simpson are both captains of their winter sports teams – basketball and indoor track, respectively.

“I believe to become Athlete of the Month requires leadership, hard work, and determination,” Simpson said. “I believe I was nominated for Athlete of the Month because I have been working hard all season and the training I’ve had in practice has been paying off.”

Simpson, who was also a captain of the volleyball team this past fall, is a captain of the girls indoor track team and a member of the girls outdoor track & field team. 

“One of my role models in sports would be (American track and field star) Katie Moon, because I think she demonstrates morals that every athlete should follow,” Simpson said.

Simpson plans to attend Monmouth University in the fall where she will be a member of the cross country and track team. She said she is proud to be January’s Athlete of the Month.

“I am grateful to be recognized as Athlete of the Month because it gives me more motivation to do better in my sport, and I’m just happy to be recognized and be appreciated,” Simpson said. 

Simpson, who recently re-broke her school record in the 55 meter hurdles, has also qualified for the Nike Indoor Nationals. 

Matchett, who was also a captain of the boys cross country team this past fall, is a captain of the boys basketball team. 

“Pretty simply put, Tanner is one of the most selfless athletes we have here at Jonathan Law and is constantly putting his teammates before himself,” Assistant Coach Mr. McPartland said. “He has had a stretch of a few games where he has put some points on the board for us as a team and he stays on top of his work in the classroom.”

Matchett said he’s honored to be recognized as there are so many talented winter athletes. 

“Some qualities that fit an Athlete of the Month are being dedicated to doing what you love, and setting a good example for others,” Matchett said.

Matchett’s older brother plays college basketball and said that as a younger brother he always looked up to him. He plans on playing club sports in college next year.

“In the future I plan on trying to play sports but for a club team at whatever university I attend,” Matchett said. “I love sports so much it would be hard to stay away from it.”

The Jonathan Law gymnastics team recently completed another successful winter routine.

The team finished second in the SCC Championships and qualified for the upcoming State Tournament. At SCCs, senior captain Natalie Morrell was named Most Outstanding Gymnast and senior Claire Moulton and sophomore Anna Uruchida made the All-SCC Team.

The gymnastics captains this year were seniors Moulton, Natalie Morrell, Angie Robinson, and Bailey Seaberg. Pat Simon is the head coach.

Along with the team’s success, Morrell also had a memorable final season, scoring her 1,000th career point in a meet against Daniel Hand.

“I am very excited about reaching 1,000 points as the accomplishment marks all of the work that’s been put in over the past four years while also marking my improvement and how far I’ve come while being part of this team,“ Morrell said.

To prepare for the SCC meet, the team worked through routines so that they would be at their best.

The gymnastics team always encourages each other on and off the mats. Meeting new faces and saying goodbye to old ones, the team makes sure they connect well and include one another. 

“I think everyone is closer with each other than we were at the beginning of the season,” sophomore Charlotte Baldieri said. “Seeing the team everyday has definitely let us learn more about each other.”

Spending time together outside of meets and practices has helped the team grow closer.

“We have mental health practices where we play games together,” junior Paige Kantor said. “When we get the chance our team has pasta parties where we play games, eat, and talk to each other and that really brings us closer together as a team.”

In order to do well, the girls need to have a positive attitude towards each other, practice, and meet.

“The easiest way to stay in the right mindset is to focus on the positive and not comparing myself to others,” freshman Samatha Matist said. “By focusing on my gymnastics and not others it can help me realize the things I am good at and being positive really helps achieve goals.”

The girls love working together and having such a close relationship.

“My favorite thing about the law gymnastics team is the team spirit,” Matist said. “The whole team is always there for each other and we will always hype each other up before a routine in a meet.”

Junior Shequanna Jennings has unveiled her talents throughout the 2023-2024 cheerleading season. 

Jennings remarkable performances have gained her a nomination for All-SCC where she will be watched closely during the upcoming state ompetition in hopes of receiving an award.

“Being nominated for SCCs felt like there was more pressure for me to do my best because there was someone watching me specifically during the competition,” Jennings said. 

Jennings spends hours refining her techniques, watching past performances and collaborating with teammates to ensure they synchronize perfectly for their upcoming competitions. 

“I prepare myself for competitions by practicing the night before over and over,” Jennings said. “I like to record myself to see how I look doing the routine.”

Jennings and the rest of the team were tasked with writing down their individual goals in a book which would be visited at the end of the season to reflect on their accomplishments and growth. 

“My goals for the rest of the season are to continue winning competitions, hit zero, and have fun,” Jennings said. 

Jennings works extremely hard and it pays off. Her teammates have noticed her hard work and dedication. 

“Shequanna is very strong in her stunts and is always willing to try new things,” junior Sofia Brienza said. “She is always trying to motivate everyone to do their best.”

Jennings’s coaches have observed her diligent effort and are immensely proud of her accomplishments. 

“Shequanna is a such a good athlete because she is dedicated and hard working,” Head Coach Morgan Colombo said. “She is also extremely coachable and takes feedback well. She will continue to work until she masters a skill.”

Freshman Kevin Cepetelli is a first-year Law JV basketball player at Law.

Cepetelli plans on playing basketball for the rest of his high school years and is working towards making the varsity team. He is excited about how his first season has played out.

“We have had some up and down moments,” Cepetelli said. “But I think we work really well as a team and I feel there is not a single player that doesn’t put 110% effort into games and practices.” 

Cepetelli continues to improve each game and always shows up with a good attitude.

“Kevin is one of the most coachable players,” JV coach Mr. McPartland said. “ He is always looking to improve his game and has a knack for asking the right questions.”

With Cepetelli being such a positive person, his teammates love to learn and be on a team with him.

“Playing with him is so fun,” freshman Tyler Stankevich said, “ He brings so much energy and skill to the court and his dribbling and shooting abilities are top-notch.”

In the future, Cepetelli is working towards making the varsity team and growing his skills more and more at every practice and game. He brings so much skill and energy to the team already.

“Kevin is also one of the more positive guys and always seems to have a smile on his face,” McPartland said. “He brings a ton of energy to our practices and games and that energy is contagious.”

This year, the team has grown so much on the court. Many fans show up to games to watch the team play.

“As a team we all care about winning and how we preform as a family,” Cepetelli said. “ There is always room for improvement.”

Junior captain Joey Richardson is a pole vaulter for the Jonathan Law boys indoor track and field team.

Richardson recently finished his strong indoor season with a 10th place finish at the Class M State Tournament.

“My season has been going good so far, ” Richardson said.  “I was able to get a personal record at my last meet which was 11 feet. Now I’m only one foot away from breaking the school record.”

Richardson is very committed to breaking his record as well as the school record.

“I’m really focused on improving my form and aiming to break the school record, ” Richard Said.

Richardson received very high praise from his teammates.

“He is the best vaulter in our school currently and qualified for states in the first meet,” junior teammate Carl Wischow said.

All the work that Richardson has put in has started to pay off. 

“Joey has put in the work all season, and has done great at meets,” junior indoor track teammate Addison Barber said.

Richardson is also a leader of the team who helps out his fellow teammates a great deal. 

“I help lead stretches and I help coach and teach anyone who wants to do field events,” Richardson said. “Field events being long jump, high jump, and pole vault.”

Teammates said that Richardson helps to bring the team together.

“He faces challenges well and his ability to inspire unites his teammates,” sophomore teammate Yeiden Nieves said.

Richardson also spends a lot of time recruiting other kids to pole vault. 

“His leadership has shined as he took the role of captain of the pole vaulters and he has done a good job recruiting people to pole vaulting,” Wischow said.

In addition to helping recruiting, Richardson enjoys helping new pole vaulters and showing them what he knows. 

“Joey shows younger kids how to pole vault and helps out at long jump and high jump sometimes,” Barber said. “He has helped me at meets and practices by taking my steps and giving me feedback on my jumps.”

The Law girls indoor track season came to a very successful end.

The team recently competed on SCC Championships. At that meet, senior Alexis Borecki broke the school pole vault record with a jump of 9’0″. 

“I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish this season considering things like the little amount practice I have been able to get in with the weather and stuff,” Borecki said. “I am excited for states and to keep improving for future meets.”

Senior Caden Simpson had a strong showing at SCCs. She tied her school record in the 55M high hurdles with a time of 8.72 which qualified her for the Nike Indoor Nationals.

“I am happy with my performance at SCCs,” Simpson said. “I tied with my school record and got a new season best after months of practice.”

Senior captain Hailey Russo had a solid showing in her final indoor season.

“So far my biggest achievement this season is making states for the 4x200M relay team and helping the SMR making states,” Russo said.

This season, many girls posted personal bests and improved meet by meet and several qualified for SCCs and states.

“It was a good season overall,” sophomore Alani Velez said. “Lots of people made states and SCCs and we had some really good relay teams for the girls this season.”

This season showed how much the girls are improving and how hard they are working towards their goals. Many different people from all different grades were training and achieving their goals over this winter season. 

“Being a freshman on the team was great, the team didn’t treat us any differently and they helped us with things like our form and how to get faster,” freshman Ava Hayden said.

Freshman Alivia Kaplanka enjoyed her first indoor track season as well.

“I think the track team is inspiring and I definitely would recommend the sport for anyone thinking of joining,” Kaplanka said.

Members of the indoor track team joined the team for different reasons, but all seem to enjoy the sport the more they try it.

“I was inspired to join the track team because my family is very involved in sports and I thought track would seem fun,” said junior Riley Lapham. “I wasn’t originally sure what I wanted to do, but the more I came to practice the more I was interested in hurdling, eventually I decided to try it and I’ve loved hurdling and track since.”

Jonathan Law girls basketball junior captain Chloe Konareski has helped the team exceed expectations this season. 

Law was winless last year, but this season they are 9-9 and have qualified for the SCC Tournament and Class MM State Tournament. 

“Coming off of a 0-20 season last year we felt like we had a lot to prove and wanted to work as hard as possible to not repeat what we did last year,” Konareski said. “We definitely improved a lot this year and are looking forward to states.”

Konareski’s leadership skills have helped the team achieve their goals and make them better everyday in practice.

“As a captain, I believe that a big component to not just winning, but having fun is confidence,” Konareski said. “Everyone picking each other up after a mistake, cheering, having  energy is really important to building confidence. I strive to set a good example for the younger and newer players hoping they will set a good example for their teammates in the future building the program in a positive way.” 

Konareski said she is excited the team has achieved so many of its goals this season.

“Our goals for this season were to win at least eight games and make it to states,” Konareski said. “Coming off of a tough rebuilding season last year, we wanted to show everyone our capabilities and showcase our hard work that was put in during pre-season and practice.”

Law is now starting to prepare for postseason play.

“We are preparing for the SCC Tournament and State Tournament by taking practice day by day,” Konareski said. “It’s a waiting game to see who we will end up playing in both tournaments, so our plan is to work on ourselves, improve on our play and weaknesses, and just hope to outwork our components.” 

As they finish up the regular season, the tea is proud of how this season unfolded.

“This year was very different from last year,” Konareski said. “Last season we had a slow start, getting a brand new coach and having a tough schedule but we bounced back after a season of rebuilding. Practice is super competitive with everyone’s strong work ethic and drive to get better and win which is awesome to see and be a part of.”

Sophomore Andrea Crump has showcased all of her talents during the 2023-2024 Law girls basketball season.

Crump has helped lead the team to a 9-9 record which qualifies Law for the SCC and Class MM state tournaments. She feels she had a better season this year, both mentally and physically.

“I came in more confident than my freshman season, with a better mindset and more skills and of course more goals to achieve,” Crump said. “There’s always more improving to do and I just take it step by step.”

The team has made major improvements and have found ways to work together this season.

“I feel like the team has been working very good together,” Crump said. “We see the goal that we are trying to reach, and we are just all working hard to get there.”

Crump’s hard work has stuck out to her coaches and her teammates. Assistant Coach Dawn Morrisey has been impressed with the season Crump has had, and knows she has been working hard during the off season.

“I would say her biggest accomplishment this year is the work she has put into expanding her game,” Morrisey said. “She has been pushing herself to develop her outside more, and working on her defense.”

This year, Crump has started in the majority of Law’s games. Junior captain Chloe Konareski knows how hard Crump has been working,and has been impressed by her abilities.

“Being a sophomore starter is a big role to fill and in the off season she worked hard to improve which she showcased this season,” Konareski said. “She is one of our leading scorers and a strong aspect to the team. I’m super excited to see her improve in the years to come.”

Crump has also been a big influence to her teammates and has encouraged them to also do their best.

“What I enjoy about Andrea as a teammate is that she always has so much energy and pushes us in practice,” Konareski said.

Law hosted two Coaches vs. Cancer basketball games against Foran’s girls and boys basketball teams on January 24.

The Law and Foran girls teams played a back-and-forth game that Foran ultimately won 55-44. The Law and Foran boys teams also played a hard-fought game which Foran won 63-36.

“This game was a big improvement from our last rivalry game,” junior Captain Chloe Konareski said. “We prepared for them and anticipated their game plan, as well as mentally prepared for it.”

Rivalry games bring together fans and other students. Junior Captain Cameron Upchurch thinks that playing against their cross-town rivals invokes another level of gameplay to the court.

“Rivalry games differ from other games because they are more intense,” Upchurch said. “We have extra motivation, and the atmosphere is great with all the fans that are there.”

While the crosstown rivalry brings excitement to the Milford atmosphere, the meaning of the games is truly why Law and Foran come together to play.

“While there is a healthy sense of competition every time we play Foran, for moments in our Coaches vs. Cancer game, our differences are put aside and we focus on what is truly important—coming together to fight for something much bigger than us,” Assistant Boys Basketball Coach Mr. McPartland said.

The Coaches vs. Cancer games raised money cancer awareness. Fans wore pink and were encouraged to donate to the designated cause of the game.

“This year the funds raised between lunch wave collections and door collections the day of the event were over $450 and went to The Get in Touch Foundation, which teaches about breast health,” Assistant Girls Basketball Coach Ms. Morrissey said.

Law vs. Foran games are important to a lot of Law’s student athletes. Most students in Milford grew up playing with or against each other, so high school rivalry games are important, nostalgic, and exciting.

“Even though we lost to them this year, that feeling will help us be stronger next year when we face them again,” junior Taylor Coretti said. “Since some of us only play Foran two more times, we are going to play harder because we want to beat our rival school before moving on from high school.”

Junior Addy Barber recently qualified for SCC Championships in long jump during Jonathan Law’s indoor track season. 

Barber is a three-season athlete, participating in volleyball in the fall, and high jump and long jump for the indoor and outdoor track seasons. 

“My goal for this season was to meet my PRs from outdoors or break them,” Barber said. “I did meet my PR in highjump and broke my PR in long jump by 10 inches.”

Barber enjoys being involved on the track team and participating in the challenging long and high jump events.

“Jumping is fun to practice because it’s something that you can improve on every time you jump by just changing little things like switching which foot I jump off of,” Barber said. 

Barber’s coach is very supportive and encourages her to make the changes she needs to improve and fix her mistakes. 

“Addy makes my job easier because she cares about how/why she had a bad jump,” Law high jump and long jump coach Mr. Colon said. “Through that I have helped Addy become a consistent jumper throughout the season because it is very important to continue to jump further and higher.”

Track is both a team sport and individual sport but because Barber is a jumper, she competes alone. 

“I love high jump and long jump because every time i’m competing it’s me trying to improve my own jumps, instead of me against other people,” Barber said. 

Barber is just one of Law’s talented junior track members. Junior Tierney Fedigan competes in the 400M, the 4x400M relay, and the 4x800M. 

“Competing in track against other runners pushes me to be the best runner I can be,” said Fedigan. 

Junior Eshanika Shee said she loves competing in long jump due to its individual nature.

“I enjoy doing long jump because it is an individual sport that focuses on improving my own personal skills,” Shee said. 

Not only does track offer so much for the students at Law but it encourages people from all sports to join.

“Track helps me improve my running for soccer season and allows me to increase my endurance,” junior Natalia Michnik said. 

As an athlete, it is important to set goals and this is exactly what Barber is doing coming out of the indoor track season and entering the outdoor season.

“Indoor definitely prepared me for outdoor because I already am in shape for outdoor, so I will continue to improve my jumps for outdoor and hopefully break my PRs,” Barber said.

Law’s Cheer team has been busy this past month working towards performing a Cheer Showcase that was held on January 20 for family and friends.

The Cheer team works hard during the football season to keep spirits high. Once football is over, Cheer takes on competitions, basketball, and the Cheer Showcase. 

“Their choreography is not for the Showcase, it’s for their competitions,” head coach Morgan Colombo said. “Their theme this year was ‘Back In Black,’ so their competition music is all about being back and competing again for the first time in a long time.” 

The practices leading up to the performance were all about gaining the confidence to perform in front of the big crowds.

“The most difficult part about preparing for the Showcase was probably gaining enough confidence as a team to perform in front of other people,” junior captain Alexa Rosati said. 

Team members agreed that having a good mindset about performing was the most difficult part to overcome.

“The hardest part of the Showcase was going into it thinking that we couldn’t hit our stunt and that we would soon perform in front of a lot of people,” sophomore Courtney Russo said. “But after hitting our stunt for the first time right before the Showcase it was a big relief.”

The showcase was a hit. The team hit all of their stunts and showed off their skills. 

“The Showcase went really well, we all had a great time and it was fun to show family and friends our routine,” Rosati said. 

This performance was just a preview of what was coming up for the team. On January 27, at North Haven High School, the team had its first competition. Law won first place in the Co-Ed Division and won the Spirit Award. 

“The Spirit Award we won was for the team that is enthusiastic, energetic, and positive even if they make a mistake,” Brienza said. “Also having good facial expressions, making eye contact with the judges, and which group the audiences were the loudest for.”

This is not the only competition cheer will attend in the coming month.

“We hope to bring home more trophies an titles and to keep building the JLHS Varsity Cheer program,” Colombo said.

The team ensures to stay connected with each other outside of practice to keep the team spirit.

“We have group chats we all text in about things that don’t involve cheer,” Brienza said. “We have pasta parties before events, we get ready together for hours before competitions.” 

The whole team was very excited about how the competition went and is excited for the upcoming competitions. In order to make memories together as a team. 

The next competition is February 3 at North Haven High School. States will be on March 2 at Shelton High School.
