The Law boys tennis tennis team made its mark in the SCC this spring season.
The Lawmen finished the regular season with a 14-6 record – the second most regular season wins in school history – and qualified for the SCC Tournament and Class M State Tournament.
“The captains – Sid, Surya, Santi, and Parth – have all been very receptive and willing to do whatever it takes and play whatever spot in the lineup I ask, to do what’s best for the team,” Head Coach Mr. Zuraw said. “There have also been a couple of juniors who have stepped up in terms of their leadership, particularly Dylan Maselli and Rithvik Muthyapu.”
Zuraw said the team has already accomplished several preseason goals and hopes to advance as many rounds as possible in the upcoming State Tournament.
“Aside from qualifying for States, we had goals to beat Foran, to get better as the season progresses, and to have a fun and successful season,” Zuraw said, “I can confidently say that those goals have definitely been achieved.”
Junior Dylan Maselli said that the team’s poise in big moments helped them all season.
“During long matches, I try to breathe and concentrate on the ball and where the players are standing,” Maselli said. “I also try to move around the most I can so that my body will not get lazy during the match.”
Members of the team praised Zuraw for his performance in his first year coaching the team.
“Our coach, Mr. Zuraw, has helped the team significantly this season,” junior Ryan Berent said, “He taught us new strategies to win our matches.”
As the season is coming to a close, Berent was proud to say that a memorable moment on the court was their senior night.
“The team getting together to thank our seniors for being great captains and teammates was a great memory,” Berent said.
Law had success in both singles and doubles this season. Maselli said the key to doubles success was communication.
“Two great players with no communication will lose to two mediocre players with amazing communication more than 50% of the time,” Maselli said. “Communication isn’t just about strategizing and communicating during the point, it is also about keeping your teammate up when they are in their own head.”
While winning is important, the team has found itself focusing on each other, and making sure they drive each other to be great players.
“Our team’s energy is very important for every match,” junior Pierce Marini said. “We’re all always expected to be there for everyone while they’re playing to keep their head in the game so we can win.”
