Justin Amaro: I am going to Long Island University Post because I really like the campus and location and they have a great musical theater program.

Tyanna Xavier: What are you majoring in?

JA: I am majoring in Musical Theater because it’s something I’ve always had a passion for and I love the feeling of being on stage.

TX: What are you doing to pass the time at home?

JA: To pass the time at home I have been sleeping, watching Netflix, Facetiming friends, playing games on my phone, going on hikes, and a ton of baking.

TX: What is your favorite Netflix show or movie that you’ve recently watched?

JA: My favorite shows on Netflix at the moment would be “Glee,” as I have rewatched it a few times now, “Tiger King,” and “Teen Wolf.”

5 QUESTIONS WITH…International Student Ayomikun Adeyanju About Coronavirus’ Impact In Nigeria

By Morgan Taylor – Editor-In-Chief

The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating in the United States, but what’s happening in the rest of the world? Advocate Editor-In-Chief Morgan Taylor spoke with international student from Nigeria and incoming Tufts University freshman Ayomikun Adeyanju to discuss her experience.

Morgan Taylor: What is your country doing to prevent the spread of coronavirus?

Ayomikun Adeyanju: We are under a lockdown however the government plans to end it this Friday because my country cannot afford to continue it. Most Nigerians work to eat so that has been a huge challenge. People plan to riot if it goes on so the government is “slowly” reopening the economy. Everything is shut and only essential businesses are open however it seems that the police aren’t really enforcing the lockdown effectively cuz there’s still a lot of human traffic on the streets.

MT: What does a normal day look like for you before this pandemic?

AA: I’m on a gap year so a normal day would involve staying at home if I don’t have an activity scheduled for that day. My mum would go to work in the morning and come back at night. My dad goes and comes as he pleases (he’s an entrepreneur so he is very much in control of his time). My brother has lessons till late in the evening.

MT: What has been the biggest change for you personally?

AA: My Aunty lives with us and she recently had a major medical issue which involved her going to the hospital. To be honest our health sector is absolute garbage. My dad had to go from hospital to hospital looking for somewhere that would admit her. And even when she was miraculously admitted into a hospital (there was an interminable line of patients waiting for one bed to be available) he had to buy every drug from someplace else. They would call him for every need of hers cuz they didn’t have any medical supplies. So apart from paying for their services, he’s paying for drugs, food, physiotherapy and additional things. She’s back home now but we were notified that someone in her ward had coronavirus so my dad has to self-isolate from us. That’s been the biggest change for me.

MT: What are your thoughts about how this could potentially impact your college experience?

AA: Well, I’m privileged to even be able to get a good education from the U.S. so I’m not too bothered if it is delayed somewhat. It’s a part of my personal college experience so I embrace that.

MT: What made you choose a college in the U.S.?

AA: Schooling here was not an option for my parents. Education system here is in shambles and higher ed here is absolute garbage. No infrastructure, terrible environment….so many scandals so my parents are literally sacrificing a lot to secure me the best education they can and I’m so grateful! Hopefully I get the degree and come back here to fix some stuff.

These things generally keep me busy throughout a day.

To my fellow classmates – I miss being around all of you. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this crisis, it’s to never take anything for granted. I’m so thankful for all the times we’ve spent together over the last 4 years and how fun you guys have managed to make school. I can’t wait for this to be over so I can see all of you again! If you’re bored, like me sometimes, and you just wanna talk to someone, feel free to call or text me. Stay safe and healthy, and keep being yourselves, cause you’re all pretty great.

BK: What is your favorite part of the Elective Fair?

FT: My favorite part of the Elective Fair is when our students greet the eighth graders when they come into the gym. It is a whole different world and they get to see it right away.

BK: Were there any changes since this event started at Law?

BK: What was your main goal for this event?

FT: My main goal is to provide all of our students first-hand information about what is available and also being able to ask questions so when they meet with their counselor they will have a frame of reference.

BK: Do you believe the Elective Fair was a successful event?

FT: Yes, I sent the students and parents home with all the information so they can look over and be prepared.

By Gillian Rees – Staff Reporter

The Jonathan Law High School Drama Club is soon going to open the curtains for its annual musical performance. On March 27, the club will perform “Footloose.” Roles for the play are: female lead Ariel Moore (junior Alaina McCarvill), male lead Ren McCormack (senior Justin Amaro), and supporting female lead Rusy Rodriguez (junior Tyanna Xavier). GR: What’s one of the biggest difficulties you guys have when preparing and putting on these musicals?

GR:  What is your favorite part about rehearsals?

TX: My favorite part is practicing with everyone, having a good time, giving feedback on how to make our scenes better .

GR: What is the plot of “Footloose?”

TX: The play takes places in a town called Bomont where dancing and playing loud music is illegal.  Ariel Moore, the girl who loves to dance, is the reverend’s daughter, who does not approve of any of it. Later, a character challenges the law to make dancing legal once again to make everyone happy and show love through the community.

GR:  Are you guys nervous about opening night?

TX: Very nervous because this is not like any show I have ever done. It is very intense, but it is also a lot of fun because we get to really show our talents and for everyone to enjoy the night of the show.
