COLUMNS: Law Laughs: Junior Sara Moshirzadeh Hosts A Unique Birthday Party

“Law Laughs” is a new column by Advocate Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Editor Gemard Guery which will detail fun “news stories” from around the Law community.

By Gemard Guery – Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Editor

One Jonathan Law student recently promoted self-love in a very unique way.

On May 20, Jonathan Law junior Sara Moshirzadeh threw her 17th birthday party along with some of her closest friends.  However, the theme truly set the party apart from any other birthday party.  The party was entirely Sara-themed.

“Initially, I wanted to have a bouncy house in my backyard for my birthday party, but for the past few years there’s always been rain on the day of my birthday party and I didn’t want to take any chances. Also, it was pretty hard to find the right size bouncy house for 20 high schoolers. I had to think about what I wanted the party to be centered around,” Moshirzadeh said.  After a while I realized that this whole year I’ve had a running joke about how amazing I am, and I decided to take those jokes a step further and make it a me-themed party and the ‘I Love Sara’ shirts to get other people to take part in the joke.”

Sara’s party consisted of ribbon with pictures of herself on it, a paper doll chain of Sara’s, a bunch of pictures of herself on a cork-board above her fireplace, and a five foot cut out of herself. The party also consisted of Sara-themed games such as trivia and a dress like Sara competition. Her party also consisted of a cake that said “Happy Birthday Queen” and a stick figure drawing of herself.

Sara’s friends were incredibly excited about the theme and party.

“It was great and definitely a representation of self-love,” senior Chris Lambiase said. “I really love the positivity she has for herself.”

At the party, some of Sara’s friends were given a shirt that said “I Love Sara” on it as a prize for winning the dress as Sara competition.

“I was so excited to spend time with friends especially Sara and appreciate all the laughs that she’s given me.  It was actually an amazing time,” junior Helen Chizmazia said.

After the party, the “I Love Sara” shirts were in high demand. Sara ended up deciding to make more and a friend suggested wearing them all to school that following Tuesday.  So many friends wanted the shirt that not everyone was able to get it.

“I wanted a shirt to match with all my fellow Sara fans.  Not getting it made me feel disappointed because I thought Sara would treat her fans better,” junior Toni Cepalia said.

Though some friends (such as myself) didn’t get a shirt, overall, the experience was just really fun for all involved and created lots of laughs between friends.

“I feel like throwing a birthday party is kind of like having a ‘you’-themed party,'” Moshirzadeh said. “I just decided to embrace that fact and have some fun with it. My friends know me well enough to know that this was on brand.”

By Alexis Rios – Staff Reporter

As we all know, this time of the year can be extremely stressful. This year, students have to deal with quarantine, AP Tests, online classes, and more. Advocate Staff Reporter Alexis Rios interviewed some students at Law about how they deal with stress.

Junior Rachna Vipparla:

“During quarantine I’ve mostly been dealing with stress by watching Netflix and scrolling through Tik Tok in order to take a break from studying.”

Junior Mia Cerrato:

“During this time, I’ve been hanging out with family, and FaceTiming friends. It definitely brings my mood up. I also have been going on hikes when I take a break from studying.”

Junior Jennifer Liu:

“During quarantine I have been FaceTiming my friends and playing with my dog to relieve stress from studying.”

Junior Jenna Hanson:

“I release stress by working out for a run. I manage my stress by making a checklist of everything I have to do that day.”

Sophomore Katie Stockmall:

“I deal with stress by doing something I like. For example, being with family or doing crafts.”

Freshman Alyssa Greggis:

“When I’m stressed, I try to just give some time to myself. For example, I watch Netflix or listen to my favorite type of music.”

COLUMN: What’s Your Quarantine Hobby? Knitting!

By Morgan Taylor – Editor-In-Chief

During our time in quarantine, many people have had more time to discover new interests or try a new hobby. Personally, I decided to start back up a new hobby! Knitting! Knitting is extremely relaxing and a great thing to do when watching TV or listening to music. Here are some tips for anyone to try. All you need is yarn and some knitting needles!

Your first step is to take your empty needle and put it through the top loop on your full needle. Make sure you aren’t missing any parts of the string.

Make sure the empty needle is placed behind the full needle in a small “x” shape.

Take your string and wrap it behind the empty needle and in between the two needles. You can drop it at this point.

This is what it should like mid-stitch.

Take out your empty needle so that you bring it in front of the full needle but without losing the stitch you just made.

Now take off the top stitch from the full needle so that your new row starts looking like this! Repeat these steps for every stitch on the full needle and start over again with the other needle being your empty one!

COLUMNS: In The Kitchen…With Addison Schwing – Homemade Cranberry Sauce

By Addison Schwing – Editorial and News Editor

Cranberry sauce is traditionally a Thanksgiving side dish, and for good reason. Cranberry season is typically in early fall, and as such fresh cranberries are only available then. Thankfully, you can buy frozen cranberries at your local grocer, so delicious homemade cranberry sauce can be made year-round. This recipe is a simple sauce that can be flavored with ingredients you probably have in your kitchen right now, such as cinnamon or orange peel, but is totally serviceable on its own. This recipe shows you how to make fresh cranberry sauce, as well as how to sterilize jars for canning.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1lb bag frozen cranberries, thawed
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • Water
  • Glass mason jars

Directions:

  1. Place cranberries and sugar, as well as any spices in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  2. Simmer the cranberries until they audibly pop and the skin splits. This should take no more than 15 minutes.
  3. Place your mason jars in a large, high-walled stockpot upside down. Cover with hot water from the tap. Bring water for a raging boil and let jars sit in the boiling water for about ten minutes.
  4. Remove jars carefully from the water. Transfer your hot cranberry sauce to the jars, leaving about a ½ inch headspace between the mouth of the jar and the lid. Transfer the jars back to the boiling water for 10 more minutes. Allow cooling for 12 hours, during which a pressure seal will form.

COLUMNS: In The Kitchen…With Addison Schwing – Roast Potatoes

By Addison Schwing – Editorial and News Editor

Roast potatoes are a perfect side dish for many meals. Whilst they are not quick, they are incredibly easy to make. Roast potatoes are very versatile in that you can add a great many combinations of spices and oils; add rosemary and thyme for a classic savory dish, or cayenne and paprika for subtle heat and smokiness, toss them with parmesan cheese and truffle oil for a truly opulent dish, or just throw caution to the wind and dip them in neon yellow cheese sauce; the choice is yours! Of course there are some essentials; namely, use waxy potatoes like red or tricolor potatoes, as their waxiness and lack of starch makes them better suited for roasting in fat than their starchier cousins. Use an oil with a high smoking point such as canola oil, and go easy with the salt and pepper up front. You can always add more later.

Ingredients:

  • 1lb waxy potatoes
  • Vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Cut potatoes in half. Toss in 2 tspb vegetable oil, add a pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. Place potatoes skin side up in a metal sheet pan. Coat with more vegetable oil as needed. Roast in the oven for 30 minutes, or until potatoes can be pierced with a fork.

COLUMNS: What Is Your Favorite Song?

By Samiksha Mehta – Entertainment Editor

In this monthly column, members of The Advocate staff will ask Law students what their favorite song is and why (is it because of the lyrics, beat/sound, meaning?). Here are this month’s responses:

Harrison Martin – Junior

My favorite song is “Change of Time” by Josh Ritter. Ritter is one of my favorite artists because he is a very, very good songwriter. He also has good music for the songs. This one is my personal favorite because I feel like there is a deeper meaning.

– – –

Angela Chu – Sophomore

My favorite song is “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” by Panic! At The Disco. I guess I just like the beat of the song and how it talks about being able to get through obstacles and eventually reaching your goals. The song is upbeat and every time I hear it I have to sing along to it. I just love the song and the band in general.

– – –

Juliana Restrepo – Junior

I have so many but one of them would be Vance Joy’s “Saturday Sun” because of the nice beat and the feeling that the song makes you feel of being at home and making you want to jump around.

– – –

Angel Santiago – Junior

My favorite song is “Gasolina” because that’s The Puerto Rican Prince’s entrance song.

– – –

Max Warner – Junior

I’d say “Midsummer Madness” by 88rising mainly because it has that ‘stick it to the man’ kinda vibe and because I listened to it frequently in Florida. It eventually became my favorite song and I will always remember it as a symbol of the summer of 2019.

– – –

Lexia Burton – Junior

My favorite song would be “Sunflower” because it is very upbeat and it brings me into high spirits with the lyrics and the beat.

COLUMNS: In The Kitchen…With Addison Schwing – Pasta Al Pomodoro

By Addison Schwing – Editorial and News Editor

Pasta is a versatile food that can be prepared a million different ways. One of the most recognizable pasta dishes, Pasta al Pomodoro is a simple tomato-based sauce, recognizable by nearly everyone. The key to a good Pomodoro sauce lies in the ingredients. Canned DOP San Marzano tomatoes are the best choice for your tomatoes, for the soil they are grown in has the perfect conditions to produce a tomato with a sweet flavor and a low degree of acidity. The simple additions of fresh herbs and parmesan rind contribute to developing layers of flavor that work in harmony. Adding tomato paste delivers a shot of deep tomato flavor, and a small pinch of sugar helps round out your sauce and combat any acidity from the canned tomatoes. Tossing the pasta in the sauce with reserved pasta water and finishing with butter, olive oil, and cheese allows you to recreate restaurant quality pasta in your home kitchen. If you have some spare time, this sauce will make you never want to eat jarred sauce ever again.

Ingredients

1 28 oz can crushed DOP San Marzano tomatoes

1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped

3 cloves of garlic, crushed

2 sprigs fresh basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 hunk parmesan rind

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 tablespoon butter

1 pinch sugar

Olive oil

2 oz parmesan cheese

Pasta of your choice, 2 oz per serving

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Set a pot of water on to boil. Add a few hefty pinches of kosher salt to the water. When the water is boiling, add your pasta and cook slightly less than as instructed by package. Reserve ½ cup pasta water
  2. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to a high-walled sautee pan. Add the chopped onion, and sautee until translucent, about 5 minutes. Crush the garlic in a garlic press directly into the onions and sautee until fragrant. Add tomato paste, sautee until darkened
  3. Add the crushed can of tomatoes, then fill the can halfway with water and add to the pasta. Add the basil, sugar, and parmesan rind, and bring to a gentle simmer. Cover and allow to simmer on the stovetop for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure the sauce doesn’t scorch. After 45 minutes, remove the basil and parmesan rind, and season with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste.
  4. Add pasta to the sauce, and pasta water. Turn heat on high and cook for about a minute, tossing the pasta and allowing the water to become incorporated into the sauce. Remove from heat, and add butter, olive oil, and parmesan cheese, tossing until the butter and cheese have melted and the sauce emulsifies.
  5. For plating, twirl noodle-style pasta such as spaghetti and bucatini with a carving fork into a mound and place in the center of a plate. Smaller shapes, such as penne and farfalle can simply be placed on a plate. Drizzle olive oil around the plate, top with parmesan cheese, if desired, and garnish with a single small sprig of basil. Serve ideally as a side with meat, or on its own with fresh bread.

COLUMNS: Study Tips!

By Samiksha Mehta – Entertainment Editor

In this monthly column, members of The Advocate staff will ask Law students how they prefer to study.

Emily Genova – Junior

“It really depends on what kind of thing I’m studying for. Like, if it’s a quiz or a chapter test, I’ll study on my own; I’ll review my notes or I’ll ask my brother if he could help. But if it’s for like unit tests or any big exam, I usually like to study with friends so they can help me understand anything I don’t get.”

Lexia Burton – Junior

“I usually study last minute and look at the concept over and over until I can answer that part in seconds.”

Katherine Ayala – Junior

“I don’t think it’s rocket science. You just study once a day every day and just make sure you do all your work and practice. It seems like a lot but if you do a little bit every day it’s not that bad.”

Vaughn Weston – Junior

“I like to listen to music while skimming through the things I need to know. My biggest piece of advice is to pay the most attention during class.”

Alexis Rios – Junior

“I like to do my work pretty much right after school. If I get work that day, I like to get it done that day. I write all of my homework down so I won’t forget about it. And for studying, I like to use flashcards and study with friends. Also, I try not to procrastinate but sometimes I still do.”

Katherine Allen – Junior

“I usually prefer to study at home because sometimes it gets too loud during study periods. I just go over the content as much as I can until the quiz or whatever it is I’m studying for comes up. It’s the method that helps me remember by repeating it even though it’s simple.”

COLUMNS: An Apple A Day: Tidbits From Teachers

By Addison Schwing – News & Editorial Editor

In this monthly column, Jonathan Law teachers will be asked questions about their career. In this installment, teachers were asked, “What is the most important part of teaching?” This is what they had to say:

“I consider the most important part of teaching to be fostering a sense of community inside and outside of the classroom. It is essential to build relationships, not only through teaching students but also mentoring, coaching, and advising them.”

Mr. Evanko, Social Studies (AP European History, Model U.N., AP Humanities)

“I think the most important thing is to get to know your students individually, and then make lessons that will be interesting to keep their attention and make them fun.”

Mr. Rodriguez, World Language (Spanish)

“Teaching is more than focusing on the individual subject or content. Teaching is working with students to develop them into a complete person so they can contribute to society as engaged persons as much as possible.”

Mr. Kravecs (AP Macroeconomics, AP United States History, United States History, Civics)

“I think the most important part of teaching is the teacher-to-student relationship. There needs to be a trust between the student and the teacher, he needs to know the material and the purpose behind it, and that the teacher cares about teaching.”

Mr. Beler, Business (Marketing, Accounting, Personal Finance, Intro to Business)

“Given the fact that I mainly teach performance-based classes, it is absolutely imperative for relationships to be established. When members of the choir perform, it is personal because they are giving a piece of themselves when they share their voice within the ensemble. They need to feel a sense of safety, camaraderie, and their “why,” in order to be successful together. I am very fortunate that our existing members and alumni have created such a welcoming space for our new members to join the Law Choir family.”

Ms. Jones, Music (Concert Choir, Chorus, Advanced Vocal Ensemble, Peer-Assisted Music, Vocal Performance Techniques for Theatre)

COLUMNS: Stop & Smell The Roses: No Slacking This Spring!

IMG_2383By Morgan Hennessey – Columns Editor

April showers in the morning and warm afternoons make it hard for many seniors to get to school and work their hardest, but do not let that make you lazy. Senioritis is just not acceptable. Whether you believe it or not, it is just as important to go to school now than it was during crunch-time, college application time. Most colleges want your mid-year grades, your second half grades, and definitely your final grades. Make some time for fun in play, because you are accepted into college and that’s exciting, but don’t slack now! You want those scholarships.

Take it from someone who waited until now. Juniors, sophomores, maybe even freshmen – you should definitely start looking at scholarships now. It is a lot to do, and it is hard to focus on it in the spring of senior year. I never knew this myself as an underclassman, but so many scholarships are available to non-seniors. Even if you don’t know what college you want to go to, it is nice to know you will have some money set aside.

To the underclassmen and the seniors who haven’t made any decisions yet: take advantage of all that guidance has to offer. They are constantly holding field trips for college visits and there are several college fairs throughout the year. They are there to help you, so find your way down to their office when you get the chance. You will find the school that you love, just keep looking and do not get discouraged. Sure, high school goes by fast – that’s what everyone says. But make the most of your time to prepare yourself.

So now that it is spring, there is prom and graduation and class night and all the fun stuff right around the corner. Oh, and AP tests! Keep studying at a steady pace. AP tests are only there to help you. If you pass them, you will save hundreds of dollars worth of credits in college. So it’s worth it to pass them. It is important to try your hardest no matter how long and hard the test might seem.

Stay on track! School is almost over, only one more marking people and you all can do! Have a good marking period, and don’t forget to stop and smell the roses… and the tulips… and the daffodils…

COLUMNS: Stop & Smell The Roses: Spring Is Right Around The Corner

IMG_2383By Morgan Hennessey – Columns Editor

It’s February… the new year has come and so has the frozen, winter weather (finally). With all this snowfall so far this month, we have to remember to stay not only warm, but also safe. Most of us are new drivers, so just be careful out there because the roads are especially icy in the mornings before school.

February also means Valentine’s Day! In elementary school we gave all our friends in our class corny little Valentines, now we don’t have to put that tradition to rest because we are in high school. Valentine’s Day is a day to show anyone that you care about them, it isn’t a holiday just for couples. There’s no need to hesitate showing your friends how much you love them and care about your relationships. Whether you make them a card, or pink cookies or cupcakes, or just tell them you appreciate them, Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a happy day for all.

Next month is Cotillion, which is very exciting for the seniors as it is their last dance. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to get dressed up and spend a fun evening together, this year it will fall on March 13th. The girls need to start getting their dresses, and the task will probably cause nostalgic feelings of their junior prom…

Prom will come along with spring, and so many seniors say it’s their favorite high school memory. It’s a great experience, and an amazing night to spend with your friends. All juniors should go – at least to post-prom – it is not something that you want to regret missing. The girls are starting to look for dresses. A word of advice is to not settle on your first dress or even the first boutique you look at. There are thousands of dresses available, not only will you maybe find a better dress, but you will definitely find better deals throughout different boutiques.

You may think prom will break the bank, but there a ways to save money. Finding your dream prom dress at discount is a hunt worth taking. Also, when the time comes, you should look for friends and family who can do your hair and makeup for you. Cotillion is more relaxed, you don’t have to get a fancy updo or even a fancy, expensive dress for that matter.

Whichever function you’re preparing for over the next couple of months, remember it’ll be a memory worth making. Make the most of it and have fun.

Stay warm, stay happy, show your friends how much you love them, prepare for the best nights of your life, and in between all that – don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.

COLUMNS: Stop & Smell The Roses: ‘Tis The Season

IMG_2383By Morgan Hennessey – Columns Editor

The leaves have changed to ruby reds, golden yellows, and umber browns as quickly as they gracefully fell from the trees. The temperature is dropping and we can’t forget our coats in the mornings. We can see thick, white puffs of air as we breathe in the early morning on our ways to school, but I promise you it is not as miserable as it sounds. For starters, warm sweaters and fuzzy socks are always a plus side to the brisk temperatures of our harsh New England winters.

With low temperatures comes snow, which is something everyone can be taking advantage of this season. Snowmen, snowball fights… snow days…. our school even has a club dedicated to snow. The Ski and Snowboard Club runs from December to March, and if you don’t know how to do either sport, they teach you! There are several trips each season, and a bus takes you and all your friends in the club to Vermont to ski or snowboard all day. But if snow isn’t your thing, many winter sports are offered at the school: indoor track, boys swimming, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics and hockey. Take your pick! There are so many activities available to students during the winter, so there is no need to be a hermit and stay bundled up by the fireplace until spring (although that is very much okay if done in moderation).

December is the month of selflessness. You can give to those who may not have all that you do. In the lobby of our school there is a holiday-themed Giving Tree with cards hanging from it. You can simply take a card, which has a child’s gender, age, and holiday wish, and then leave their unwrapped gift under the tree along with the card. It’s a fun way to give to younger children in the community. Giving doesn’t stop there – you can show random acts of kindness in school and outside of school. Helping someone with the books they dropped, paying it forward at Dunkin Donuts, or complimenting a strangers outfit are all very simple ways to make someone else’s day a little bit better.

I hope you make the most out of this month, because cold, dreary weather does not mean you have to have lame, dreary days. It is the holiday season and it is the time to be joyous! Stay positive, and try to help other people stay happy as well. Have a lovely day, and don’t forget to stop and smell the roses!

COLUMNS: Stop & Smell The Roses: Welcome Back!

We are about a month into school and it is so hard to imagine how quickly it went. The freshmen are finding their way through the halls by now, and the seniors should be working hard on their college search (I suggest you find your way down to College and Career if you have not already). Hopefully, all of you are trying your very best in all of your classes. As you know, every year counts. Trust me, freshmen, slacking off in your first period math class will haunt you for the rest of your high school career, so please don’t think it doesn’t matter because it does.

Freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, senior year… It is all going to be stressful if you don’t get organized and pace yourself, and that’s the painful truth. It’s so very crucial not to leave homework assignments until the last minute. Procrastination is an evil thing, and you know what they say: old habits die hard. If you have a project due next week, work on it a little bit every day. It’s also going to be stressful if you focus all your attention on your homework, so that’s where organization comes into play. Plan out homework time, and then enjoy yourself because you deserve it!

School is a hard work but it can also be a place for fun, believe it or not. There are tons of sports available to you every season, clubs for all kinda of interests, whether you like art, learning a new language, or community service, and let’s not forget homecoming is creeping up on us, along with other exciting events throughout the entire year. Whether you are on the team or going to the Friday night games, get involved somehow because it is the easiest way to make friends and have a good time.

Be sure to surround yourself with good people who bring out your best; these four years will go by quickly and it’s nice to have friends along for the ride. Never forget the importance of doing your best in all that you do, whether it’s in sports, in community service, or in your classes. Never hold yourself back from your full potential. Most of all, do not waste these valuable years constantly stressing. Enjoy high school, I’ve heard it’s the best time of your life.

Make the best out of this school year whether it’s your first or your last, and don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.
