TikTok’s latest obsession? AI fruit-people starring in ‘Love Island’ inspired vertical episodes.
This is the latest example of how far internet culture will go in the pursuit of virality, and how little the majority of TikTok users seem to question it. What started as a bizarre concept has blossomed into one of the most controversial topics circulating on the “For You” page, gaining millions of followers and likes in under a week.
Every video, every animated character, every artificial voice, every flirtatious remark, every backstabbing choice-relies on energy-intensive artificial intelligence systems that use enormous amounts of electricity and water, contributing to carbon emissions and placing strain on already limited natural resources.
While one video might seem harmless, the statistics are what matters: millions of views, constant content generation, and countless creators hopping on the trend to further advertise it.
What makes this especially frustrating is that while some AI is used for the greater good, like for medical research or climate modeling, trends like the AI fruit Love Island exist purely for entertainment, while there are 19 (English) seasons of Love Island with real human beings. This is part of the growing wave of “AI Slop” against human creation.
We are quite literally burning through energy and resources just to watch talking apples argue over fictional disagreements and relationships just for a few seconds of entertainment.
The bigger issue isn’t that it’s just one trend; it’s what it represents.“Shows” like this one will inspire many others, further increasing the scale at which limited vital resources are being wasted.
Social media has always had a waste and overconsumption problem, but this time it will take a much larger toll on not just the human race, but the environment and our Earth.
So, the popularity of the AI Fruit Love Island show begs the question: Are we really willing to sacrifice so much for the sake of entertainment?
