Senior Alani Velez is one of the captains of the Jonathan Law outdoor track team. Advocate Sports Editor Abigail Merenda interviewed Velez about the upcoming season.

Abigail Merenda: What is your goal for the upcoming season?

Alani Velez: My goal for this upcoming season is to break my own personal records in the long jump and the 100M as well as placing in the SCC and States for the 4x100M.

AM: What are your goals as a captain for the team?

AV: My goals are to continue leading to my best ability. I really just want to continue what I’ve been doing. We have a good dynamic between captains and other student-athletes and I would like to continue our success.

AM: How do you think this team has grown since last year?

AV: The team has grown more in numbers and talent. Every year we see more talented athletes that are committed to the team.

AM: What advice have you given the new members of the team for this season?

AV: Some advice that I’ve given is to never stress too much because the more you stress the worse you perform. There are people in the team that are willing to support and help you.

AM: What are you going to miss about track?

AV: I’m going to miss the family we built, but most importantly, I’m going to miss running with my duo Molly Croce.
