Jonathan Law’s wrestling team kicks off their year soon after a long off-season.
The team opens their season at Fairfield Prep on Wednesday, December 13.
“I am most excited for getting the opportunity to compete and for all the competitive tournaments and duals on our schedule, I like to test myself and the only way to do so is to face high level competition,” senior captain Zack Sulkis said. “I competed a lot this off season all over the northeast so I feel I’m very prepared to face high-level guys.”
Last year, junior Brayden Hancock made multiple postseason tournaments as a first-year starter.
“I’m excited to try to make New Englands this season,” Hancock said. “I want to place in the top three at a majority of my tournaments.”
The team finished 13-12 last year and are looking to improve big from then.
“I’m looking forward to seeing our wrestlers succeed, we have some pretty good kids this year so I’m excited to see how they do,” senior captain Ben Girandola said. “As a captain, I have to set an example in practice, and also help people stay focused and driven.”
This year, Law also has a record number of girl wrestlers on the team.
“I’m excited to have so many new faces and returning faces to the wrestling team this year, as well as seven female wrestlers, the most in a single season in Law history,” assistant coach Mr. Ruzbarsky said.
High expectations have been set by the coaches and the captains for all of the starters and new faces.
“Some goals that I have for this season is to be varsity 120 and start placing in tournaments and help the team place higher,” junior Sophia Abbaspor said. “I also want to place third in states this year and go to New Englands. What I am excited about the upcoming season is the tournaments and meets with the girls on the team and also the ability to improve and get better during the season, and face other people from other schools, and see where I am and improve as much as I can.”
