With the 2023-2024 basketball season underway, the Jonathan Law boys basketball team is ready to take the court.

Tryouts are happening, and players are anxious to show off their skills. Last year, the team finished their season with a 17-3 record. They made the State Tournament and lost in the quarterfinals round to Platt High School.

This year, senior Liam Valvo and junior Cam Upchurch will serve as captains for the Lawmen. Valvo said the team has high expectations again this season.

“Our ultimate goal is to win the state championship,” Valvo said. “However, our first goal is to make the State Tournament.”

Valvo is excited to take on the role of captain this year.

“I try to build relationships with the younger guys on the team because they are the future of the program,” Valvo said. “I always try to encourage them during conditioning because it can get tough at times.”

Valvo also pointed out that this season will bring a lot of new additions to the team. He acknowledged the challenges and the obstacles they will have to go through to reach the postseason.

“We are young so it’ll be tough,” Valvo said. “We graduated seven seniors last year, and they all were crucial to our success. Since we are very small this year, we are going to have to play very fast. Therefore, it is important that we are in the best possible shape. In fact, getting in shape, pushing each other every day at practice, pressing hard every game, and playing hard defense will bring success.”

This year will be a challenging one; however, the Lawmen are ready to rise to the occasion and accomplish the goals they have set for themselves.
