Jonathan Law freshman Michael Loschiavo shines brightest when he is in the middle of a race on the track.
Loschiavo has run cross country and indoor track where he was on varsity and he will be running outdoor track in the spring.
“He is only a freshman and he qualified for states and he runs with all of the seniors,” senior captain Lauren Paredes said.
Loschiavo stands out from other runners his age because of the amount of work he puts in. He practices when it is not mandatory and asks his coach for workouts beforehand.
“He is so kind and hardworking,” sophomore Samantha Franzman said. “He tries his best so he can improve each meet.”
The races Loschiavo runs during indoor track are the mile, the two mile and the 4×800 meter “A” team relay.
“My favorite race probably to run is the 1600 meter because it is so much fun, you start out slow and then increase your pace,” Loschiavo said.
Before coming to high school, Loschiavo worked to improve his times by running in running clubs.
“I expect Mike to lead the distance crew as both a captain and as an example of what hard work and determination can do for an athlete,” indoor track coach Mr. Rhode said. “He has the potential to be one of the better distance runners that Law has had.”
The work that Loschiavo puts in on the track shows others what they can do to become better and inspires them.
“Mike’s running does inspire me to push myself in track to become better,” junior Irmina Chrzastek said. “Seeing how hard he worked as a freshman makes me want to try harder and I can’t wait to see all of the great things he’s going to accomplish within the next three years.”
Loschiavo is always trying to figure out and plan ways to better his times at meets.
“Mike always runs with better and experienced athletes during training,” Rhode said. “This shows that he’s not afraid to push himself everyday in training.”
Even though he plays three sports during school, Loschiavo still finds the time to play other sports such as recreation basketball and lacrosse.
Loschiavo looks forward to the upcoming outdoor track season and is expected to succeed most in his individual races which are the 1600 meter and 3200 meter.
