The Jonathan Law girls basketball team is shooting for a successful season this year.

The girls are excited for a new season, coming off of an impressive 14-6 record last year.

Senior captains include Laura Dulin, Erin Saley, Jess Centore, and Kailee Frank. The girls are looking for a victorious season to finish off their high school career.

¨My goals for this season are to make it further in the state tournament and improve on our record,” Saley said. ¨Our underclassmen this year have a lot of talent so I think we will be really successful.”

The team had three scrimmages against East Haven, Stamford, and Joel Barlow to start off their season. The girls feel that they played strong, but could use improvements.

Head coach Mr. Young knows that with hard work at practice, the girls will improve.

“The team is working hard and improving every practice,” Young said. “We want to improve defensively this year and play fast.”

Key players for this season include Saley, Centore, Dulin, Frank, and senior Paige Szygiel.

The hardest teams the girls will play this season include Mercy, New London, and division rival Daniel Hand, but they know with teamwork they can come out on top.

“I think these teams will be good competition for us, but we need to work together as a team if we want to win,” Centore said.

The team’s freshman are also excited about the new season and are looking forward to their next three years on the team.

“I’m excited for the upcoming season working on skills and improving in basketball,” freshman Pam Ellison said. “Also working with a different team will be a new experience for me.”

Despite the exciting year ahead, seniors already know they will miss the team once the winter season comes to an end.

¨I will miss the team so much because they make basketball fun and they all became very good friends,¨ said Frank. ¨We all make eachother better and Mr. Young has taught us so much.¨

To make their last season worthwhile, seniors are planning pasta parties and other team bonding events to ensure a fun season.

“It’s important to have team bonding so we can have good chemistry on the court and play as a team,” said Frank.

To start off their regular season, the girls will play at Amity on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The girls first home game is against West Haven on Wednesday, December 23 at 6 p.m.
