Law took down rival Foran 10-3 in the annual cross-town Powderpuff game on November 24.

It was second straight win for the Lady Lawmen, who are 14-4-1 all time in Powderpuff.

“It was a great feeling winning the game,” said senior captain and quarterback Gege Romero. “Going into it we were pretty confident because of all the work we put into it in practice, but it was awesome to see it all come together and have the work pay off.”

The game was back and forth throughout the entire first half. Law’s Bethany Edwards kicked a 26-yard field goal to put Law 3-0 up towards the end of the first quarter. Foran tied it up right before halftime with a field goal of their own that barely squeaked over the crossbar.

Law’s defense played a key part in keeping the game close, with defensive players Paige Szygiel (LB), Kailee Frank (LB), Keala Hoff (DL), and Maddie Murphy (DL) playing a key role in shutting down Foran’s offense.

“(Mr. Ragaini) and (Mr. Nigretti) worked us really hard and taught us so much and tweaked everything so we could be the best defensive players we could be in about a month,” said Frank. “Being on the defensive side was so much fun but you had to be disciplined enough to do your part and make the play.”

The second half was just as close. The game went into the third quarter knotted at 3-3 with both teams looking to make the final push towards the end zone and close the game out.

This push came in the form of senior running back Jess Centore.

Centore, who was arguably the player of the game, with 12 carries for 113 rushing yards. With time running out late in the fourth quarter, Romero shanded off to Centore who took the ball down the left sideline to the end zone to put the Lawmen ahead 10-3.

“It felt good [scoring the game-winning touchdown] because towards the end of the game we were getting nervous that it was just gonna remain a tie,” said Centore.

Although Centore had the lone touchdown of the game, she was not the only key offensive player on that cold night across town: Romero had four completed passes for a total of 45 yards, all of which ended up in the hands of senior wide receiver Erin Saley.

“Any time you can beat Foran is a great feeling,” said Robinson. “Just seeing the joy on everyone’s faces makes [winning] worth it.”

Law held on for the win in the closing minutes, with junior Victoria Contaxis intercepting a last-ditch Hail Mary effort from Foran’s quarterback as time ran out.

“[The game] was nuts,” said head coach Mark Robinson. “But we had faith that the girls would find a way to make the win happen, which they did. Contaxis didn’t catch a single ball in practice for three weeks and she seals the game with an interception? They wanted the win.”

The game took place at Foran this year, but that did not stop legions of fans from coming out to support the Lady Lawmen in the frigid weather in hopes that this year’s squad could repeat last year’s success.

“Even though it was cold on the night of the powderpuff game it didn’t stop us from coming out and supporting the girls,” said senior Frankie Mucciacciaro. “It definitely was fun rooting for them especially in a close game.”
