Advanced Placement Studio Art is off to a great start at Law.
This is the first year Law has offered an AP Art class and art students are really excited about it.
“It is a nice way to take a break from the rigor of academic classes and express my creativity,” junior Danica Wenz said.
Students get AP weighted credit, a portfolio of work that can be used for college, and the experience of working with students at the same artistic ability level. The students also have an opportunity to receive college credit based of their portfolios.
“AP Art improves my artistic abilities and it is such a big jump from drawing little things to focusing on how to express things in a more creative way,” junior Bianca Relucio said.
AP Art students must complete 24 pieces of their best work by April vacation. Twelve of these pieces are based on one concentration and 12 are their best quality. They eventually have to photograph the pieces with a professional camera and upload everything to the AP College Board website.
“AP Art improves my artistic ability and helps me improve on my weak points and build on my strong points,” senior James Thomas said.
After every project the class finishes, they talk about the intention of their artwork and everyone works together to improve each other’s work and offers critiques.
“Critiques after every assignment help us improve,” senior Cavar Grant said.
The class recently went on a trip to the Peabody Museum.
“At the museum the students drew from taxidermied animals,” AP Art teacher Mrs. Murphy said.
The class has a trip planned for the beginning of November to the Manhattan Museum of Art and Design, and in February, they are going to the new Yale Art Gallery in New Haven.
