NEWS: National Honor Society Gifting For Good Cause
Bright lawn ornaments, a holiday cheer, and knitted hats can only mean one thing: the holiday season is here, and what holiday is complete without presents?
Collaborating with the social workers at Bridges, a community support organization known for their work with the needy, the National Honor Society is giving underprivileged children the opportunity to get just what they want for the holidays through the annual Giving Tree toy drive.
“It’s important to share the wealth,” said National Honor Society leader Ms. Turcotte-Mottas. “If we’re capable of helping others, why shouldn’t we?”
The idea of the Giving Tree is simple: take a card, give a present. Children write their age and gender, and one thing they want, and a generous person will take that card and provide them with a present.
Each year, the National Honor Society strives to get about four or five presents for each of the 40 children, for a grand total of 200 presents donated.
“The giving tree is a project NHS does every year, and we feel privileged to be a part of it,” said Law senior and NHS member Alexis Christy. “Knowing you can make a difference in a child’s Christmas makes it well worth the effort”
Student response to the Giving Tree has been only positive.
“The giving tree gives students a chance to reach out and do something nice for the community,” said Law senior Mallery Breban.
The Giving Tree is continuing until December 15. Students are encouraged to embrace the spirit of giving and provide a child a gift.
