NEWS: Law Hosts Health Fair

Did you know that chocolate milk is better for you than regular milk or orange juice?

Upon walking into Jonathan Law’s Health Fair on Tuesday, October 18, students first encountered a presentation directly from the Milford Public Health Service about the seven nutrients of chocolate milk compared to other drinks.

At the fair, students wrote their names on an index card and used it to collect stamps from each program.

The cards were used for a raffle that offered popular prizes, such as clothes.

The program was coordinated by Health Teachers Ms. Carroll and Mr. Sweeney.

“The goal is to let people become more acquainted with the services available,” Carroll said.

Dozens of other professionals also gathered in the gymnasium to share information about their healthy lifestyle programs, including Milford Hospital, Zumba Fitness, and True Colors, an organization with the goal of “supporting the sexual minority youth.”

Other topics discussed at the fair include the benefits of a good night’s sleep, how to have good posture, and dental care.

A popular presentation was the car crash simulation. The driver’s seat moved at only five mph, but the brave participants could still feel the impact at the slow speed.

Some colleges, such as Quinnipiac University and Southern Connecticut State University, also showed up to talk about the career choices they offer.

The program representatives told Carroll that the Jonathan Law students behaved well and asked good questions.

Students collected pencils, pens, and brochures in their break from class. Most importantly, though, they gathered some newfound knowledge of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
